Pompeu Fabra University Ciutadella Campus. Barcelona Architecture 2012 » Design Literacy/ Week 3. The three university buildings of Pompeu Fabra University Ciutadella Campus were designed in the 1990s as a restoration project. The site is adjacent to the Ciutadella Park in a quiet, residential area that has access to a tram and metro line. The main library was designed from an old, water tower and utilizes large Roman structural arches of brick. The other two buildings served as military barracks and were renovated into academic buildings with classrooms, faculty offices, cafeteria, and public spaces with open, naturally lit atriums in the center of the buildings. Front of the UPF buildings Side view of the main library The primary design strategy for the main library building was to open the interior and utilize natural light. Long hallways were used to house books and study tables for students.

Elementary, my dear Watson – | City Maniak | Barcelona. Walking through the Paseo San Juan in Barcelona, once left behind the monumental Arc de Triomphe and towards Diagonal, we found on top of one of the entrances, a modernist lantern, wrought iron and colored glass that invites us to enter a curious and stately bourgeois building threshold of a small library.

With wooden furniture, which is accessed via a grand staircase of Ionic columns on both sides and chaired by a replica of the Statue of Liberty with clear indications of Masonic inspiration. With a floor in black and white squares and a drawing of a human figure with a Phrygian cap next to the symbol of Freemasonry, a compass and square that are above the shield Avant lodge created by Arús himself, we enter this spectacular place. Arús Public Library (BPA), founded in 1895 by Rossend Arús, has become a research center specializing in contemporary social movements and bibliographic production of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Built in the fifteenth century and declared a national Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931, the ancient Santa Creu hospital is one of the city's most characteristic Gothic buildings. The building was constructed during the 15th century and was directed by the building master Guillem d'Abriell. It is Gothic in style. Of the four wings that surrounded the arcaded courtyard, only three remain today, since a second arcaded courtyard was built connected to the first. In the building complex there is a small church with a single nave, barrel arch and two adjoining chapels.

At present the series of buildings that make up the ancient hospital, are also the location for different city institutions, including Catalonia's National Library, Massana College, the Institute of Catalan Studies and the Public Libraries of Santa Pau and Santa Creu.
