A measure before the New York City council would require buildings larger than 50,000 square feet to undergo energy audits, reports the New York Times. Buildings that underperform in the audits would be required to make energy efficiency improvements.

The measure would be an extension of the city’s PlaNYC, which was launched in 2007 with the goal of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from the city’s municipal buildings and operations by 30 percent by 2017. James Gennaro, chairman of the council’s environmental protection committee, said that two-thirds of the city’s carbon emissions are related to buildings. He called the proposed measure a plan for the city’s future. “Eighty-five percent of the buildings that we have in 2009 are going to be here in 2030,” he said in the article.
