I interpreted it to be the time that we are not concerned with being busy. There is the work that we have to do to make a living, there is the busyness that we make by way of cleaning, errands, seeing friends, working out, and so on, and then there is the margin - the unplanned time. I don't know many people who have a lot of it, but it exists, and it is ours to fill. To fill with yet more busyness or leave open for small pleasures. I fall default to the former. It will only be a short post today since we are on our way to the Gràcia neighborhood and we can hardly wait to get out the door. It's the place where many of my favorite recipes (or recipes ideas) go until I am ready to share them. I suspect that if I ever chose to do another book (years from now!) , much of the inspiration would come from the pages of this 5-by-8-inch booklet. It still has many, many blank pages waiting to be filled and I look forward to the meals, travels, and conversations that will surely spill over from my life to sneak between its front and back covers. If you invite my dad to a picnic, barbecue, housewarming, or block party this time of year, odds are good he'll show up with a macaroni salad. He'll wheel it around in a cooler and when the time is right, he'll flip the top and pull a cornflower blue bowl from the ice. The bowl is what I notice first, ceramic with a flower detail on the inside rim, it's part of a set of three my grandma left when she died a few years back.
