Tests. Dictations are fun! | teflreflections. No, I haven’t gone insane. I really think they are. On top, dictations are also powerful EFL teaching tools if used judiciously. Yes, I know. The very sound of the word DICTATION can immediately make some go red with embarrassment. Others may shudder with trepidation. Nervous sweat rolling down your brow. Clasping and unclasping your hands. You would very much like to formally plead the teacher to be mag-na-ni-mous and to spare you the suffering if only you knew how to spell the damn word… Sounds familiar? Now a teacher yourself, you’ve probably been trying to save your students from going through the same trauma, long ago banning any form of dictation from your classroom. Dictations are great teaching tools, especially in a one-to-one setting. The Best Web Tools For English Language Learners (In Other Words, The Ones My Students Regularly Use) I received a comment from reader Mark, who says he loves all “The Best…” lists, but would like to hear my top recommendations sometimes. Of course, I have posted The Best Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced English Language Learner Sites, but even that is a pretty lengthy one. So, I thought I’d begin a running list here of posts where I have described (and future additions will describe) the Web 2.0 tools that I regularly use with my English Language Learners. In addition, I’ve also included direct links to a few other great tools that my students regularly use for direct language-learning. I thought this list might “narrow” things down a bit for readers.
I also hope that readers will contribute their own suggestions! Glastonbury Festival - much more than music. Glastonbury festival is one of the most vibrant, colourful and energetic events of the British summer and tickets sell out minutes after going on sale. It also is the world’s largest open air musical festival, as 180,000 people flood (sometimes quite literally) to Worthy Farm in the heart of the Somerset countryside. Every June, thousands of tents, caravans and stages pop up over night for a weekend of brilliant live music, art and merriment. The festival covers 1300 acres of farmland and uses the same amount of electricity as the city of Bath – the Main Stage alone has over 250 speakers! Last year Glastonbury celebrated its fortieth birthday - let’s find out how and why superstars, hippies, and music lovers all still head to the mother of all music festivals. Glastonbury began life as the ‘Pilton Festival’ and was unrecognisable from the town-sized event we see today.
Glastonbury is renowned for one more thing – the mud.
Adventure reading. Soundscapes from Soundtransit. Sound Transit is a really wonderful formulation of an idea. It's not just a huge collection of Mp3 sound files from all over the world, but the sounds have been tagged by country and described and a visitor to the site can take a sound journey around the world. You just choose your country of origin, your destination and how many stops you want to make. You then get offered a choice of itineraries with stops at various destinations and descriptions of what you will hear there. You choose the one you want and then the site edits together the individual sounds to create a unique sound journey for you. You can then download your mp3 sound journey, listen to it online or send it to a friend. To try this go to the Book a Transit part of the site. To download any of the sounds you just need to right click and then click 'Save As..' Best Nik. Textivate. MentorMob - Great Minds Share Alike - MentorMob.

News in 3 levels. TEENS IN THE TIMES - The Learning Network Blog. Photo Welcome to February’s edition of Teenagers in The Times. This month, several of the young people who made headlines did so by working for change, even when it meant taking on a tradition or institution. For example, campus activists at the University of Vermont were instrumental in getting the school to recognize a third gender — neutral. Another story highlighted the students at 135 colleges and universities who are working to present alternatives that challenge the notion that alcohol and drugs are inherent in campus life. And at Princeton University, the first woman was elected president of Tiger Inn, an eating club that has had a reputation for insensitivity to female students.
