Therapy dogs from a western Wisconsin animal sanctuary are a gentle presence to polytrauma patients at the VA Medical Center at Fort Snelling. Simon is a tall, lanky 3-year-old red Doberman with gentle eyes and uncut ears. He lives at Home for Life animal sanctuary near Star Prairie, Wis. His veterinarian surrendered him to the sanctuary after his owners gave him up; they couldn't handle Simon's incontinence, caused by a birth defect. Nathan Florey is a tall, trim 24-year-old Army sergeant recovering from two brain aneurysms. He lives in the polytrauma unit of the VA Medical Center at Fort Snelling. He suffered his first aneurysm Oct. 31 while serving in Baghdad; his second came Nov. 19 at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington. Simon and Florey met in March when the certified therapy dog came to the VA as part of Sit*Stay*Heal, a community outreach program run by Home for Life.
