CLASSES: Army ROTC at Virginia Tech The Department of Military Science provides a program of leadership development which prepares college men and women for service as officers in the United States Army. FAS Sets New Minimum Academic Requirements By Debra Bradley Ruder Gazette Staff The Faculty of Arts and Sciences last week approved new academic standards in an effort to help identify poorly performing students who could benefit from time off from school.
Harvard College officials proposed raising the "minimum requirements" and the "satisfactory academic record requirements" so the Administrative Board would be able to review the records of more undergraduates who are struggling academically. Very poor academic performance is almost never the result of lack of ability, according to Harry R. Lewis, Dean of Harvard College. "Almost always it is a consequence of lack of motivation, unclear academic direction and purpose, or underlying personal or psychological difficulties," he writes. Under the new definitions, a "satisfactory record" means all grades are satisfactory, and at least one is a letter grade in an FAS course. The new standards take effect in the 1997-98 academic year.
