François Rousseau. Photos of young hitchhikers and freight train hoppers by Mike Brodie. In 2004, when Mike Brodie was only 17 years old, he hopped trains with this weathered group of youngsters armed with a camera in order to document their exhilarating existence on the roofs of freight trains and on the banks of the railroads. Since 2002, Brodie has covered more than 50,000 miles and visited 46 US states on over 170 different freight trains. The photography started in 2004 after Brodie found a neglected Polaroid camera hidden behind a friend’s carseat. Once Polaroid film was discontinued, Brodie switched to 35mm film and a more traditional camera and these images are the result.
