What I want to leave my son. Even though I’m all about living in the moment, sometimes it’s hard to avoid thinking about your child’s future. The other day I was alone as I walked the streets of Paris at night. Long walks are always a great time for pondering things, and this time I was considering the question—What legacy do I want to leave my son? Tigger snapped this of me on the carousel Age I want to leave my son with the belief that age is really a useless number (except where it involves legal requirements). Prior to his 11th birthday, he rejected my plan to get him a piñata for his party and wasn’t sure he wasn’t too old for a party.

I hope he doesn’t fall into the trap of doing what he thinks people expect just because of his age. Individuality I often hear him express being concerned what someone will think. He’s considering becoming a surfing instructor when he’s an adult. Don’t let fear rule your life Lots of things are scary. I am terrified of falling, but we rode this ferris wheel in Paris anyway.

For years now, one of the central changes that’s been happening in the ad industry--or, a change that the industry has been trying to effect--has been the shift from the notion of making ads (that is, one-off messages that run for a short, pre-determined period of time) to the idea of making content, and having an ongoing conversation with consumers. You can see that evolution reflected in Super Bowl commercials.

Everyone (including us) has been discussing the Amazing Expanding Super Bowl Commercial--the phenomenon whereby marketers are using the mass broadcast event as a focal point around which they are building larger, longer social media and video initiatives. Brands want to make hay while people are actively paying attention to ads, of course, and to make the most of a big ($3.5-$4 million dollars just for media) investment. Twitter Increases Student Engagement [STUDY] Communicating in 140-character segments may seem to contradict the goals of generally long-winded academia, but a new study has found that the two are less opposed than one might think. Four sections (70 students) were given assignments and discussions that incorporated Twitter, such as tweeting about their experiences on a job shadow day or commenting on class readings.
