Conventions. IntroductionThe industrial revolution of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the upsurge in international commerce which followed resulted in the adoption of a number of international treaties related to shipping, including safety.

Conventions

The subjects covered included tonnage measurement, the prevention of collisions, signalling and others. By the end of the nineteenth century suggestions had even been made for the creation of a permanent international maritime body to deal with these and future measures. The plan was not put into effect, but international co-operation continued in the twentieth century, with the adoption of still more internationally-developed treaties. (more) IMO was made responsible for ensuring that the majority of these conventions were kept up to date. Adopting a conventionThis is the part of the process with which IMO as an Organization is most closely involved.

UNCTAD's Work Programme on IIAs actively promotes international investment rules that effectively foster sustainable development and inclusive growth. The main aspects of this work are: to monitor trends, identify key emerging issues and provide cutting-edge knowledge on IIAs from a sustainable development perspective;to deliver trainings, seminars and workshops and offer ad-hoc advice to strengthen the capacity of beneficiaries in handling the complexities of the IIA regime; andto facilitate the sharing of best practices and experiences with the view to fostering global investment governance.

EU treaties

This means that every action taken by the EU is founded on treaties that have been approved voluntarily and democratically by all EU member countries. For example, if a policy area is not cited in a treaty, the Commission cannot propose a law in that area. A treaty is a binding agreement between EU member countries. It sets out EU objectives, rules for EU institutions, how decisions are made and the relationship between the EU and its member countries. Treaties are amended to make the EU more efficient and transparent, to prepare for new member countries and to introduce new areas of cooperation – such as the single currency. Under the treaties, EU institutions can adopt legislation, which the member countries then implement. Full texts: Council of Europe - Treaty Office.
