Facilities participating in Superior Energy Performance (SEP) demonstrations receive tailored assistance to apply the ISO 50001 energy management standard and to test the requirements of SEP certification. Staff at demonstration sites develop a set of skills to more effectively manage and maximize value from energy resources consumed by their facilities and apply a recognized methodology for measuring and verifying energy performance improvements.
Training, Resources, and Support for Facilities The Advanced Manufacturing Office's (AMO) state and regional energy efficiency partners are coordinating the SEP demonstrations. Demonstration support teams are working with the facilities to implement energy management systems that conform to ISO 50001 and to measure and verify the resulting energy performance improvement. Facilities, which were selected based on desired characteristics, receive training and resources to prepare for SEP certification: Costs Time Period. ANSI Accredits First Certification Body under Superior Energy Performance Pilot Accreditation Program New York August 12, 2010 The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), coordinator of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, today announced that KEMA Registered Quality is the first certification body to be accredited under the Institute’s pilot program for Superior Energy Performance (SEP). The SEP Program, an initiative guided by the U.S. Council on Energy-Efficient Manufacturing (U.S. CEEM), aims to provide industrial plants with a road map for achieving continual improvement in energy efficiency while maintaining competitiveness. Under the terms of the program, a third-party certification body assesses the conformance of a manufacturing facility to the SEP requirements for energy intensity improvement.
Launched in late 2009, the ANSI pilot program for Superior Energy Performance is the latest addition to the Institute’s slate of accreditation programs. Energy Efficiency: A Key Component of U.S. Competitiveness. Energy Efficiency: A Key Component of U.S. Competitiveness With the rising cost and variability of energy, many U.S. companies are looking for ways to cut their energy costs and improve their long-term competitiveness. Responding to this challenge, the International Trade Administration (ITA) recently organized a Forum on Energy Efficiency in Manufacturing to underscore the available resources both state and federal governments provide to help companies be more efficient. by Ryan Mulholland Energy efficiency, long considered the low-hanging fruit of the global energy challenge, represents not only the largest opportunity to increase energy security and limit carbon dioxide emissions, but also the lowest-cost option to improve sustainability.
According to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, more than $300 billion is invested in energy efficiency every year in the United States—a number that could grow to $700 billion by 2030. (Story continues below.) Rep. Incubator Visit. Time For U.S. Manufacturing To Consider Energy Efficiency. September 4, 2008 Time For U.S. Manufacturing To Consider Energy Efficiency While many manufacturers have been reluctant to invest in energy efficiency and have deferred domestic investments due to market uncertainty, a new report by American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, titled “Trends in Industrial Investment Decision Making,” says economic indicators suggests that the industrial sector is poised for a new period of major capacity investments, because existing capacity is approaching full utilization. In addition, the report reveals that a number of market trends are beginning to favor a shift to domestic production for domestic consumption.
The report says this new period of major capacity investment represents a chance for program managers to influence energy efficiency at facilities. The U.S. manufacturing sector spent $5.9 billion dollars on capital expenditures and $20.7 billion dollars on operating costs for pollution prevention and treatment in 2005. Understanding the Cost of Solar Energy. In comparison to conventional hydrocarbon fuels such as coal or oil in generating electricity, the cost of solar energy is significantly higher. To compare energy cost, a common equivalent is required. Back in our previous post, Coal: Fueling the American Industrial Revolution to Today’s Electric, we developed a framework to measure energy costs by converting costs to kilowatt-hours (KWH). In our example, a ton of coal on the average produces approximately 6,182 KWH of electric at a cost of about $36 per short ton (2,000 pounds).
Under this measure coal cost less than$0.01 per KWH. In comparison, a barrel of oil at $70/barrel produces 1,700 KWH at a cost approximately $0.05 per KWH. Energy Comparison 1 ton of coal = 6,182 KWH 1 barrel of oil = 1,699 KWH 1 cubic foot of gas = 0.3 KWH Energy Costs 1 ton of coal costs $36 = $0.006 per KWH 1 barrel of oil costs $70 = $0.05 per KWH 1 cubic foot of gas $0.008 = $0.03 per KWH Figure 1 Cost of Energy Figure 2 Solar Energy Component Costs.

Technology Action Plan The global industrial base is diverse and expansive—encompassing manufacturing, mining, construction, energy-intensive processes, and other operations that ultimately convert raw materials into finished products. Overall, industry accounts for one-third of the world’s total energy consumption and, as a result, a similar share of the world’s fossil fuel carbon emissions. And while incremental improvements have continuously reduced energy intensity, overall emissions continue to rise due to global industrialization. Log In for Free Access to Publications. Energy efficiency is a key strategy for electric utilities to help their industrial and manufacturing energy consumers reduce energy use and save money in the process. More than 6% of all electricity in the industrial manufacturing sector1 and nearly 38% of commercial sector electricity2 is consumed by lighting. Significant reductions to electricity supply costs can be realized by focusing on reducing the lighting demand created by industrial and large commercial customers. The U.S. Department of Energy's Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) is interested in helping utilities reduce industrial demand on electrical systems, thereby saving energy in the process. To aid in that effort, ITP has developed the Turn-key Demand-side Management (DSM) Web site for Lighting. The Turn-key DSM Lighting Web site is an online tool developed by ITP to assist small- and medium-sized utilities in developing a lighting incentive program for industrial customers. 2 EIA, 2003 CBECS, Table E3.
