Photochrom. Photochrom[Note 1] (also called the Aäc process) prints are colorized images produced from black-and-white photographic negatives via the direct photographic transfer of a negative onto lithographic printing plates. The process is a photographic variant of chromolithography, a broader term that refers to color lithography in general. History[edit] The process was invented in the 1880s by Hans Jakob Schmid (1856–1924), an employee of the Swiss company Orell Gessner Füssli—a printing firm whose history began in the 16th century.[1] Füssli founded the stock company Photochrom Zürich (later Photoglob Zürich AG) as the business vehicle for the commercial exploitation of the process and both Füssli[1] and Photoglob[2] continue to exist today.
From the mid-1890s the process was licensed by other companies, including the Detroit Photographic Company in the US (making it the basis of their "phostint" process),[3] and the Photochrom Company of London. Night photography has the ability to take a scene and cast it in an unusual light — much like the "golden hour" surrounding sunrise and sunset can add an element of mood and uniqueness to a sunlit scene. Just as how sports and landscape photography push the camera's limits for shutter speed and aperture, respectively, night photography often demands technical extremes in both (see below). Due to lack of familiarity and since night photos are often highly technical, many photographers simply put their camera away and "call it a day" after sunset.
This section aims to familiarize the photographer with obstacles they might encounter at night, and discusses how to surmount many. Night photography is subject to the same set of constraints as daylight photography — namely aperture, shutter speed and light sensitivity — although these are all often pushed to their extremes. Fortunately, times have changed since the early days of night photography. What is a proper exposure at night? Dual Photography.
