OS X Human Interface Guidelines: The Philosophy of UI Design: Fundamental Principles

The principles described in this chapter are critical to the design of elegant, efficient, intuitive, and Aqua-compliant user interfaces. In fact, they drive the design of the OS X user interface. Metaphors Take advantage of people’s knowledge of the world by using metaphors to convey concepts and features of your app. Metaphors are the building blocks in the user’s mental model of a task. Metaphors should suggest a use for a particular element, but that use doesn’t have to limit the implementation of the metaphor. Mental Model The user already has a mental model that describes the task your software is enabling. Before you design your app’s user interface, try to discover your users’ mental model of the task your app helps them perform. A good example of how reflecting the appropriate mental model results in a clean, intuitive user interface is the iTunes app.

The Web Aesthetic - Aurora. Twelve years ago, John Allsopp asked us to embrace the adaptable nature of the web.

The Web Aesthetic - Aurora

We didn’t listen. Although the web standards movement that followed advocated the separation of presentation and content—an essential requirement for adaptive design—this only manifested itself in code. Floated divs replaced table cells, yet layouts remained governed by the inflexible conventions of print. Today, when every device begs to be connected, it has become easier—almost necessary—to accept the adaptable nature of the web. Responsive web design is an emerging best practice, and our layouts are becoming more flexible. To put it another way, we’re embracing “responsive” but neglecting the second part: “design.” The material of the web#section1 To properly design for a medium, you need to understand it. It’s this combination of protocols and conventions that helps the web achieve what Sir Tim Berners-Lee calls its “primary design principle”: universality.

iOS Human Interface Guidelines: Human Interface Principles - Aurora. Aesthetic Integrity Aesthetic integrity doesn’t measure the beauty of an app’s artwork or characterize its style; rather, it represents how well an app’s appearance and behavior integrates with its function to send a coherent message.

iOS Human Interface Guidelines: Human Interface Principles - Aurora

People care about whether an app delivers the functionality it promises, but they’re also affected by the app’s appearance and behavior in strong—sometimes subliminal—ways. For example, an app that helps people perform a serious task can put the focus on the task by keeping decorative elements subtle and unobtrusive and by using standard controls and predictable behaviors. This app sends a clear, unified message about its purpose and its identity that helps people trust it.

But if the app sends mixed signals by presenting the task in a UI that’s intrusive, frivolous, or arbitrary, people might question the app’s reliability or trustworthiness. Consistency To determine whether an iOS app follows the principle of consistency, think about these questions: Ultimate Photoshop Design Resources.

There's no doubt that I like to design. Next to coding, I also love to edit photos, designing websites etc. My personal favorite tool to achieve this, has to be Adobe Photoshop. Next to a good tool, you'll need some good resources. Fonts, Plug-ins such as Brushes and Textures, Stock photos can help you tremendously when designing. Here's a list of my personal favorite photoshop design resources. Fonts, Stock Photos, Patterns, some Textures and Inspiring sites do not require Photoshop.
