People's fascination with their inner workings may provide a new way for scientists to raise money for basic research. Both are basic science projects aimed at understanding how microbiomes influence health. Using a website called Indiegogo to crowd fund, the uBiome and American Gut projects have together raised more than $600,000. Crowd funding, in case you're unfamiliar it, is accomplished by posting a project on a website like Kickstarter, setting a fundraising target, and asking people to donate.

Google releases detailed map of North Korea, gulags and all. Until Tuesday, North Korea appeared on Google Maps as a near-total white space — no roads, no train lines, no parks and no restaurants. The only thing labeled was the capital city, Pyongyang. This all changed when Google, on Tuesday, rolled out a detailed map of one of the world’s most secretive states. The new map labels everything from Pyongyang’s subway stops to the country’s several city-sized gulags, as well as its monuments, hotels, hospitals and department stores.

According to a Google blog post, the maps were created by a group of volunteer “citizen cartographers,” through an interface known as Google Map Maker. In the case of North Korea, those volunteers worked from outside of the country, beginning from 2009. Crowdfunder Launches Social Enterprise Hub To Help Fund Causes. Crowdfunder, an online business crowdfunding platform, has launched a new service called the Social Enterprise Hub. It’s goal is to connect potential investors with those enterprise organizations doing social good and focusing on helping to improve the well-being of humans and the environment. Analogous to being a Kickstarter for companies, Crowdfunder is known for helping to acquire funds for businesses in exchange for equity. It describes itself as a service that gives business owners and investors the necessary growth and fundraising tools at any part of the business lifecycle. Thanks to the passage of the JOBS Act, now companies can raise money through “contribution-based” crowdsourcing efforts and Crowdfunder is one such service to build a connection. Extending beyond that, the company has set its sights on the social enterprise. Scheduled to run 365 days a year, Crowdfunder’s Social Enterprise Hub will allow people to contribute whatever they can.
What Color is this? in 9 languages. I've always wanted to re-do some of the scientific studies of the past, like the World Color Survey. While I don't have plane tickets or time to travel the world, I do have access to CrowdFlower's 4 million contributors to re-test hypotheses about the universality of color-naming. Four years ago, we showed English language speakers random colors and asked for the color names. Four years later, with CrowdFlower contributors now in every country of the world, the experiment becomes much richer.
The question is not only "Where does blue end, and red begin? " The color-wheel above (thanks D3 and Dawn) contains 4,000 colors (we collected many more, but didn't want to crash everyone's browsers). The U.S. Senate today approved, 73-26, an amended version of legislation that will legalize “crowdfunding,” or equity investments in start-ups by the general public. The CROWDFUND Act (or Capital Raising Online While Deterring Fraud and Unethical Non-Disclosure Act) adds requirements to the House of Representatives’ JOBS (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) Act that companies use SEC-approved crowdfunding platforms that provide investor protections.
Though both bills have had bipartisan support, they are controversial in the business world, as many people worry that lowering the barriers to investing will encourage fraud. The Senate amendments were focused on creating protections for nonaccredited investors. Under the Senate bill, entrepreneurs will be allowed to raise up to $1 million per year through approved crowdfunding portals. The amount investors will be able to spend will be capped based on their income, with some people only allowed to put in a maximum of $2,000. Jobs Act Could Expand Funding For Startups. Lawmakers in the House are expected to vote on a jobs act Tuesday.
Part of the legislation would allow the public to make investments in start-up companies and small businesses. These companies could raise money online or through social networks.
