Syracuse University student viral video to appear on ‘The Ellen Show’

The video of Hannah Melton, captured by Hannah Redfield, has gone viral on the web. The video, and Melton, will appear on NBC’s "The Ellen Show" Thursday afternoon. Redfield submitted the video as an assignment for a School of Information Studies (iSchool) class titled Social Media and the Enterprise. The goal of the assignment was to make a viral video, challenging students to understand why and how content spreads from person to person. "This assignment is an exploration in Internet Anthropology," says iSchool Professor Anthony Rotolo, who teaches the course, in an article on the school's website. The video was posted to YouTube on March 24 and currently has over 137,000 views.

Melton and Redfield are both students at SU's S.I. Read more about the video here. 'Call Me Maybe': Behind the Song With Carly Rae Jepson. Ali @ Destiny USA. Log In. Ali @ #rotoloclass. Why Relationships Matter and ROI Doesn’t

That is, corners are cut and customer service is subservient to getting “paid.” Don’t get me wrong, I like getting paid as much as the next person but too many times we question the return before we implement any kind of customer service process that influences both repeat business and word-of-mouth. Albert Einstein said it best when he said, “Everything that can be counted doesn’t necessarily count; everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted.” I recently wrote a post called, Forget About ROI, Start Think About ROE. Social media is so prominent, particularly on college campuses, that it’s difficult to find a college without a social media policy these days.

15 Colleges with Strict Social Media Policies

The vast majority of college social media policies detail guidelines and helpful ideas for getting the most out of social media as a student or university representative, but some take a negative turn, cutting off communications, restricting what can be said, and enacting strange requirements. Last week, Mashable’s Sarah Kessler authored an article about Pinterest clones which focused on sites that have copied the look, feel, and/or overall functionality of social media’s most recent phenom. What I haven’t seen though, are posts that put forth some higher order thinking around the act of curating content and what that means for individuals and for social media in general.

Before going any further, let’s agree on a definition. Content curation does not include generating content, but amassing content from a variety of sources, and delivering it in an organized fashion. Anyone interested in finding relevant content pertaining to a specific category and funneling this information to an audience (public or private) in a mash-up style is a content curator. It's Social Media Week all over the world, and plenty of the events are being streamed or live-tweeted, which is great for others who can't get to things but want to know what was said. I did get along to the Edelman offices in London yesterday for a 'Social Business in Action" panel discussion consisting of David Armano (@armano) and Robin Hamman (@cybersoc) of Edelman, consultant Euan Semple (@euan) and Vincent Boon (@vincentboon) of Giff Gaff.

Several strong themes emerged and they're being echoed at other events so far this week, namely: Issues with the phrase 'social business' - there's plenty of talk about it, but also plenty of argument about it. Personally I prefer it to 'social media' because it gets us away from a narrowcast way of thinking that it's all about Facebook 'likes'/twitter/foursquare campaigns etc. But not eveyone likes 'social business' - there's a feeling that most businesses still run a mile from any talk of 'social'.
