3 Reasons to Always Have Structured URLs. Since the flat site architecture concept appeared on the SEO horizon and gained some traction around 2010, many SEO consultants got it wrong. The flat site architecture concept is related to the click distance between pages in a site, and how relevancy is distributed according to internal links structure — yet has nothing to do with URLs.

The main misunderstanding was, and unfortunately still is, that you have to get rid of directories in URL structures. Although it is widely agreed that you may want to keep URLs short and locate keywords close to the root or left part of the URL, there are many reasons why you should keep a certain structure of folders or directories there. Yesterday, I had an interesting encounter at the grocery store that truly demonstrated the power of trust and authority on conversions. As I reached for my usual almond butter at Trader Joe’s, two women congregated nearby, each with a different type of almond butter in their hands and puzzled looks on their faces.

“Have you tried this before?” One of the women asked me. “Is it good?” What followed was a fun tutorial by me about the types of almond butter the store carried. A few minutes later, I found out they had heard about almond butter on The Dr. Curious, I asked them what it was about the almond butter that helped people sleep. To me, this was an extremely powerful example of how authority, trust and right channels can move a person to conversion. Build Authority First, let’s get one thing straight: the term “expert” is totally played out. These “experts” are also willing to share that knowledge freely. Try building authority through: Build Trust With authority comes trust.

How to Choose Social Media Share Buttons. Social share buttons are a great way to spread the content you have deeper into networks across the Web – but which social share buttons are right for your site? Sometimes, the “catch-all” approach to buttons that we so often see isn’t the best route; you know, those widgets that produce a bunch of buttons for social communities for the sake of trying to reach everybody and their mother … Oftentimes, this can just confuse readers or make them think more than they should have to in order to share the content they like. There are several approaches to how you can identify which social share buttons you should include on your Web pages.

One is checking traffic sources in your site’s analytics. Another is knowing who your target audience is and where they are hanging out socially online. And yet another is assessing the importance of individual social share buttons as metrics in whatever goals you have for the business. I've seen this on both sides, from an agency perspective and a brand perspective. And often, this oversight is due to loaded questions such as: What metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) should we track, why, and how does this affect the bottom line? I'm not here to point fingers or make anyone look bad. Metrics can be a bothersome, confusing layer to a campaign, whether it's social media or any other digital campaign.

As companies have rushed into the elusive social media marketing gold mine, many are left trying to figure out if all the time and effort is paying off. The problem is that social media is extremely difficult to measure.
