By 1890 there were some 43 ecclesiastical parishes (today 28), Islington is in the modern London Borough of Islington, as are parts of Holborn and Clerkenwell and Old Street, which are the subject of a separate list.

The rapid growth of industrial London in the 19th Century saw the green fields north of Kings Cross and West of Upper Street Islington gradually transformed into leafy squares and terraced streets.
