I made a curious observation today that the psychological concept of personality may be useful in characterizing social websites. For example, a website can be introvertive or extravertive. As in psychology, these are not absolute categories, but rather an indication of a bias toward one end or the other.

An intravertive social website draws attention of its users towards its local content, while extravertive social website draws attention of its users outside towards the content present on other sites of the web. Two examples to illustrate these are 3form and StumbleUpon, respectively. Both implement essentially the same technique, human-based evolutionary computation. This technique allows people to contribute items to the database, draw random samples from the population of items, evaluate sampled items.

The software computes a fitness function from those evaluations and uses it in later sampling. What about other websites? Wikipedia was always mildly introvertive. Models of collaborative tagging - Wikipedia, the free encycloped. Many have argued that social tagging or collaborative tagging systems can provide navigational cues or “way-finders” [1][2] for other users to explore information. The notion is that, given that social tags are labels that users create to represent topics extracted from Web documents, interpretation of these tags should allow other users to predict contents of different documents efficiently.

Social tags are arguably more important in exploratory search, in which the users may engage in iterative cycles of goal refinement and exploration of new information (as opposed to simple fact-retrievals), and interpretation of information contents by others will provide useful cues for people to discover topics that are relevant. One significant challenge that arises in social tagging systems is the rapid increase in the number and diversity of the tags. As opposed to structured annotation systems, tags provide users an unstructured, open-ended mechanism to annotate and organize web-content. Diigo Company Profile. Bookmarks. Amp; Medium Makes Web Browsing Social. Do you feel alone in your web browser, separated by time and space from all the other people out there exploring the internet? A startup called Medium thinks it can help make web browsing social by telling you what pages your friends are on at any moment, and where people are congregating on the web at that instant. Think of it as a real-time StumbleUpon, or an implicitly determined Digg. The company’s origin is in enterprise collaboration software developed by founder Robert Reich, who moved out to Boulder, Colorado with co-founders David Mandell and Peter Newcomb for the opportunity to bring on Kimbal Musk as CEO.

Musk, along with his brother Elon, sold their content management company Zip2 in 1999. Multiply: A Different Approach To Social Networking. Written by Alex Iskold and edited by Richard MacManus. In our Social betworking faceoff post we did not cover Multiply.com, but afterwards we were contacted by the Multiply team and asked to take a look at their technology. We found it unique and interesting, so we are bringing you this analysis post. Multiply has recently experienced substantial growth and now has 3M registered users. The service has been around for quite some time and its core is family and friends networks. But unlike many social networks, particularly MySpace, in Multiply the focus is on how individuals consume information in the social network.

Other places focus on socializing first and foremost. I spoke this morning with Multiply's president and founder, Peter Pezaris, and was quite impressed with Multiply's approach.
