Today we’re happy to offer a guest post by Ross Smith, Director of Test, Windows Security, at Microsoft, and one of the authors of The Practical Guide to Defect Prevention (Microsoft Press, 2007): Ross here.

This month celebrates the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Harry M. Markowitz’s classic book, Portfolio Selection. In this ground-breaking publication, for which he was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1990, Markowitz talks of the benefits of diversification and the mathematics behind risk-reward strategies. Modern portfolio theory (MPT), based on Markowitz’s work, suggests that the return of an investment portfolio is maximized for any given level of risk by using asset classes with low correlations to one other.

In other words, a diverse set of investments reduces risk and maximizes return. How does this apply to testing software? The most important aspect of the diversified approach is to stay with the portfolio once it has been established, regardless of return. 1. At Some Schools, Facebook Evolves From Time Waster to Academic S. Blog Archive » Google Copies IE7 Promo Material From Yahoo. Yahoo and Google have personalized versions of the new Internet Explorer 7 browser. Yahoo’s is available for download here, and Google’s version is here. The page layout and content for the two sites is nearly identical, although this may be a simple cut and paste from recommended Microsoft promotional information What’s more interesting is that the screen shots in both images showing IE7 are also identical.

The Yahoo version clearly displays the Yahoo toolbar with a large red Y! In the left corner. The Google shot contains the same image, with the red Y! This could easily be a situation where Microsoft was sloppy and sent out Yahoo-copied materials to Google. Update: Google replaces the site in question by 11 pm, just 6 hours after this story broke. Socio-digital Systems. Elegant technologies for complex lives Socio-Digital Systems (SDS) aims to use an understanding of human values to help to change the technological landscape in the 21st century. Beyond making us all more productive and efficient, we ask how we can build technology to help us be more expressive, creative, and reflective in our daily lives.

Our group considers a broad range of human values, aims to understand their complexity, and puts them front and centre in technology development. An important aspect of this endeavour is the construction of new technologies that, in turn, we ourselves can shape. SDS does this through the bringing together of social science, design and computer science. Socio-Digital Systems is one of three groups in the Computer-Mediated Living research area at Microsoft Research Cambridge. Current Themes This group develops its work through themes that represent interlocking sets of social and technical concerns. Theme: Beyond Search Theme: Interacting without Touching.
