Harvesting the Collective Intelligence of Social Networks | NewA

http://www.newassignment.net/blog/david_cohn/jan2007/21/harvesting_the_c The social news site Digg is a hub of information. Links are shared, votes are cast and in theory the best information rises to the top. The magic behind the site is not the algorithm that determines when stories are promoted to the front page, it’s the people who are constantly scouring the Web, submitting stories and providing the intellectual power that keeps the site running.
BestThing.info, TheFairest.info, and TheFunniest.info are a trio of side projects to the webcomic xkcd . They host contests where people vote to select the best choice from a large pool of user-submitted options. The system behind the sites is fairly simple, and is based loosely on the idea of the Condorcet criterion for voting systems. The system gives each one a number based on, out of the things that it has faced, what percentage of them it usua lly beats.
