See my entries to the challenge at the end of this post. Anyway, I had envisaged doing a concrete circle grouping like I showed here, but as the time went by I decided against the idea. It’s Chelsea, swinging by with bow and arrow in hand, to help you celebrate the people you love this Valentine’s Day. And let’s be real – I have no complaints about celebrating love (not to mention that conversation hearts are one of my favorite food groups). So let’s get down to business! DIY : Scratcher Lotto Ticket. Fish scale pendant lamp. This is the second project we’ve shared from designer Kara Paslay in recent weeks, and again she’s managed to reintroduce me to a cool technique I had long forgotten about.

Inspired by the ocean, Kara decided to transform a simple paper globe into a beautiful sculptural pendant lamp. By dyeing and dipping cut paper rounds into wax, Kara has transformed the material into an almost unrecognizable state. The “scales” have a glowing, translucent finish and a gorgeous deep watery hue, giving the lamp a beautiful texture, whether it’s unlit or switched on and glowing from within. I can’t get over how far removed the end result is from a simple paper globe, and given that the whole project cost around $20 and can be done in an afternoon makes it even more appealing!

If you’re looking to add some oceany colors and textures to your home for summer, this inexpensive and easy project might be the perfect choice. Hand-painted valentines. Of all the holidays, Valentine’s Day seems to scream “handmade cards” the loudest.

Glitter, doilies and lace are the usual suspects for decorating, but why turn to them when you can easily create a sophisticated ombre valentine? With this simple technique, there is no need for vats of dye, oodles of drying time, complicated instructions or any special tools. Using materials as simple as paint, water and gravity, the paint pigment naturally fades and blends as it flows down the card, resulting in a painterly ombre effect without all the fuss. The edges of each card are then gilded so your love shines through the moment the envelope is opened. Paired with a classic “roses are red, violets are blue” poem and some heart-shaped Red Hots to fill the envelope, it is the perfect combination of chic and kitsch. P is for Printing

Kate is a champ when it comes to advanced crafts, which I define as crafts that require some significant infrastructure. For example, she has a house full of beautiful handmade pottery and some very pretty stained glass pieces. Kate invited me over for a day of screen printing, and if I do say so, it was quite a successful day and not nearly as intimidating as I had imaged. I'm going to write this as if I'm an expert, but I am absolutely not. If you're serious about wanting to try this, Kate recommends "Printing by Hand" by Lena Corwin.
