The Department is at the heart of research in management science and operational research (OR). We have a worldwide reputation as an international centre of excellence, with students from many countries undertaking PhD research. Our faculty have edited key journals, such as the Journal of the Operational Research Society and the European Journal of Operational Research, and have played a pivotal role in UK-wide innovations in the subject. The Lancs Initiative, which seeks to develop the foundations of OR, has attracted the largest amount of funding to support the development of OR anywhere in the world.

No one expects you to know the results of your research; rather, the proposal is your signal to your committee that you have a clear idea of what you want to investigate and a plan of how to proceed.
