The plane, provisionally called T-50, is the country's first fighter jet based on the stealth technology and is viewed by military experts as the Russian answer to the American F-35 and F-22 jets. The flight lasted for 47 minutes and was successful, being piloted by Sergei Bogdan, one of Russia's best test pilots, Sukhoi corporation spokesman Alexei Poveshchenko told CNN.

According to the manufacturer, T-50 is an "intellectual" jet which can fly at any time of the day and in any weather conditions and is capable of simultaneously attacking multiple targets in air, on the ground and in the sea. Russia to Open Sixth Chemical Agent Disposal Plant

"The Pochep facility is meant to play an important role in Russia's completion of the fourth stage of its international obligations under the [Chemical Weapons Convention]," read a statement from the Federal Directorate for Safe Storage and Destruction of Chemical Weapons. "The facility construction is a bright example of international cooperation," the statement said. Switzerland and Germany supplied financial aid and technical assistance for the plant's construction. The Pochep arsenal houses aerial chemical shells and roughly 7,500 metric tons of organophosphates, nearly 20 percent of Russia's total chemical arms stockpile.

Gates Aims to Ease Russian Concerns Over Missile Shield

Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Monday touched down in Russia, where he was expected to make another effort to assuage the Kremlin's concerns about a planned European missile shield, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, March 18). Under the Obama administration's plan for NATO missile defense, land- and sea-based Standard Missile 3 interceptors with increasingly advanced capabilities would be gradually deployed around Europe as a hedge against potential missile attacks from the Middle East. While Moscow is less opposed to the Obama plan than an earlier Bush-era proposal to field 10 long-range missile interceptors in neighboring Poland, the Kremlin continues to suspect the United States of secretly planning to undercut Russia's strategic forces. The first phase of the Obama plan is now under way with the deployment to the Mediterranean of a guided missile carrier outfitted with an advanced missile tracking radar (see GSN, March 2).
