The peace process is still dead | FP Passport

To thunderous applause before a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress, Israeli Prime Minister delivered what amounted to a stunning rebuke of Barack Obama's vision of Middle East peace, just days after the U.S. president outlined his basic parameters for a two-state solution. There was little, if anything, new in Netanyahu's speech : He reiterated his longstanding positions on borders (he won't go back to the 1967 lines), Jerusalem (he wants it to remain undivided), refugees (none can return to Israel), and security (a demilitarized Palestinian state, with Israeli troops "along the Jordan River"). http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2011/05/24/the_peace_process_is_still_dead

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Israel troops admit Gaza abuses - Mozil

Israel frequently claims to possess the most moral army in the world An Israeli military college has printed damning soldiers' accounts of the killing of civilians and vandalism during recent operations in Gaza. The testimonies were published by the military academy at Oranim College. Graduates of the academy, who had served in Gaza, were speaking to new recruits at a seminar. "[The testimonies] conveyed an atmosphere in which one feels entitled to use unrestricted force against Palestinians," academy director Dany Zamir told public radio. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7952603.stm

A Hamas legal advisor on Wednesday said jailed Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), Aziz al-Dewik, will replace president Mahmoud Abbas when his term ends in January until elections are held. The announcement adds more tension to the deteriorating ties between Hamas and Abbas' Fatah movement and widens the internal Palestinian rift. AFP: Palestinian elections scheduled 'very soon': Abbas - Mozill

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) — Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said on Tuesday he will "very soon" schedule Palestinian elections in the absence of reconciliation with the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip. "We will very soon call presidential and legislative elections within the Palestinian Authority here in the West Bank and in Gaza," Abbas told journalists. The Western-backed Palestinian president had earlier given the Islamist Hamas movement until the end of the year to accept reconciliation talks, warning he would otherwise call snap elections. Hamas, which dominates the current parliament insists legislative elections are not due until 2010, but that presidential elections should be held in the coming weeks. The Islamists say Abbas's mandate ends on January 8, 2009, a claim the president's secular Fatah faction rejects.
Disagreement between Hamas and Fatah over when the next Palestinian elections will be held may have strategic significance for Israel. Hamas has stated that it will not acknowledge Abu Mazen’s legitimacy as President of the Palestinian Authority (PA) after January 2009, when it believes his term in office is due to finish. Hamas claims that new elections should be held in January 09′ since according to the PA’s Basic Law (which also serves as its temporary constitution) Abu Mazen finishes his Presidential term after 4 years. If elections are not held, the Presidency temporarily passes to the Speaker of the Parliament, Abd al-‘Aziz Dweik, who is currently held by Israel. If Dweik is not released, Hamas will appoint his deputy who is also a Hamas member. http://reut-blog.org/2008/09/25/palestinian-elections-2009-hamas-fatah/

Global Voices Online » China and Hong Kong: Views on Gaza Confli

After the first intense air strikes in the Gaza Strip at the end of 2008, Israel continues the attacks on the densely populated Gaza in 2009 and it is expected to cost more Palestinian lives. While there are mass demonstrations against Israel’s military actions in London, Paris, Berlin, Athens and several Muslim countries, what are the reactions in Hong Kong and China to this humanitarian crisis? Will peace come? Jackhomme , a Hong Kong blogger is rather cynical towards the situation and believes that we can do nothing to stop the current Gaza conflicts.
