Indian police charge ex-minister in telecoms scandal. Narendra Modi (narendramodi) sur Twitter. India’s Nuclear Doctrine: Stirrings of Change. In the beginning of April 2014, at a conference initiated by the Indian government, Manmohan Singh casually urged the creation of a global convention to forswear the first use of nuclear weapons. Why the Indian prime minister chose to make this major policy declaration in the last hours of his term in office is a mystery. To unravel this mystery, it is important to note the context. Singh was addressing a conference at the Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses (IDSA) titled “A Nuclear Weapon-Free World: From Conception to Reality.” The IDSA is supported by the Indian Ministry of Defense and has been a favored venue for India’s leadership to make important policy declarations on national security. BJP spokespeople clarified that a review of India’s no-first-use policy would be accorded priority if the party came to power.

All this rhetoric is par for the course in the heated atmosphere of the Indian electoral process. The Limitations of Nuclear Deterrence Pakistan Ups the Ante. Maurice Gourdault-Montagne. Tiger vs. Dragon: A Demographic Comparison of India and China. One of the biggest story lines of the 21st century is going to be the continued economic rise of China and India. According to the World Bank, both countries grew at a rate of 9.1% in 2009. Here’s a chart of their growth since the 1960s: While their recent growth has been roughly similar, China and India also boast the two largest populations on the planet. But a new study by RAND shows the giants heading down different demographic paths. Demographic contrasts between China and India will become more pronounced in the coming decades, and these differences hold implications for the countries’ relative economic prospects. Here’s a breakdown of this demography race: Population goes to India: India has more children per mother – 2.65 versus China’s 1.54 – mostly due to China’s one-child policy.

Comparing the ratios of men to women, they both lose, with a disproportionate number of men leaving generations of bachelors twisting in the wind. Indian police fire on Kashmir protesters. ANOTHER protester has been killed in revolt-hit Indian Kashmir, bringing to six the number of young men shot dead by security forces in two days as fresh violence shakes the region. The latest casualties marked the deadliest 48 hours in the Muslim-majority Himalayan territory since June 11, when the turmoil first erupted after a 17-year-old student was killed by a police tear-gas shell. So far, Indian security forces have been accused of killing 23 Kashmiri civilians - many of them in their teens or 20s - in less than two months.

The latest casualty, a 30-year-old man, was killed yesterday when security forces opened fire at rock-throwing protesters in northern Baramulla town, a police officer said, asking not to be named. Earlier, a young man was killed in the neighbouring Naidkhai village when "security forces opened fire as a group of protesters tried to attack a police camp", he said. "The condition of one injured woman is critical," the officer told AFP.

Indian international relations.
