The band had a revolving line-up of bassists and drummers, their most prolific being drummer Patty Schemel, and bassists Kristen Pfaff (d. 1994)[3] and Melissa Auf der Maur. Initially part of Los Angeles' indie rock scene, the band released singles on Sympathy for the Record Industry and Sub Pop before collaborating with Kim Gordon for their debut album, Pretty on the Inside (1991).[4][5] After signing with Geffen Records in 1993, the band released the critically and commercially successful Live Through This (1994), and Celebrity Skin (1998), the latter of which garnered them four Grammy nominations.[6][7] The group officially disbanded in 2002 and its members pursued other projects.

Hole formed after Eric Erlandson responded to an advertisement placed by Courtney Love in Recycler in the summer of 1989. Hole - Violet - Firefox. Hole - Doll Parts - Firefox. She is of German Swiss descent. Because Nick Auf der Maur was Canadian and Linda Gaboriau was born in the U.S., she holds dual Canadian-U.S. citizenship, as well as Swiss citizenship. Auf der Maur's surname translates as 'On the Wall', as 'maur (die Mauer)' was derived from the German word for 'wall'. Auf der Maur says her grandmother, Theresia Schaelin-Auf der Maur, was "always pounding my heritage down my throat",[1] and was very proud of the name, which is on the brink of extinction.

Musical career[edit] Hole[edit] Auf der Maur became friends with Billy Corgan after apologizing for a friend who had thrown a beer bottle at the band during one of The Smashing Pumpkins' first Canadian concert dates at Montreal nightclub Les Foufounes Électriques (which translates to "The Electric Buttocks").[2] Her band, Tinker, opened for The Smashing Pumpkins in Montreal in 1993.
