About 3,000 workers took part in three separate rallies to mark Labor Day in Phnom Penh on Friday, with the municipal government warning of possible legal action against the leaders of two of the demonstrations, who failed to heed official warnings not to bring workers onto the city’s streets.

More than 1,000 workers rallied outside the National Assembly, hundreds more outside the Labor Ministry and a similar number at Freedom Park—the only location approved by the government—calling for higher wages, better working standards and the scrapping of the controversial draft Trade Union Law. Workers take part in a march to the National Assembly to mark Labor Day. About 3,000 workers took part in three demonstrations held in Phnom Penh. (Siv Channa/The Cambodia Daily) Deputy municipal governor Khuon Sreng said that although authorities allowed the marches to go ahead, City Hall would consider taking legal action against the union leaders who defied its orders. Mr. “Vorn Pao did wrong,” Mr. Mr. Why-has-the-West-tolerated-Hun-Sen. Amid the range of articles marking Hun Sen's 30 years as Cambodia's prime minister, including Elliot Brennan's in The Interpreter and a similarly thoughtful piece by Mark Dodd in the Financial Review of 19 January drawing on personal experience in Cambodia, there has been very little reflection on why the West has tolerated Hun Sen.

After all, the criticisms being aired of him today have applied over most if not the whole of his domination of Cambodian politics since 1993. There have been an almost endless number of occasions when he has demonstrated his readiness to preside over corruption, brutality and a readiness to subvert popular will. The most notable of the latter was his refusal to cede power to the opposition FUNCINPEC party in the UN-sponsored elections of 1993. So what explains this state of affairs? Cambodia's involvement in the Vietnam War led to a widespread view in the West that accepted, and in many cases welcomed, the overthrow of the Lon Nol regime in 1975. Officials tour Nauru, fail to meet refugees, Post Weekend, Phnom Penh Post. A Cambodian delegation that arrived in Nauru on Tuesday for high-level meetings to progress a controversial refugee resettlement scheme has toured Australian-run detention centres on the island, according to a rights group.

But while three Cambodian officials were “being seen all around the camps and Nauru”, they have not met any of the more than 1,000 asylum seekers and refugees face to face as had been expected, said Ian Rintoul of the Refugee Action Coalition. An MoU signed by Cambodia and Australia in September agreed that refugees given the option to relocate to the Kingdom, instead of staying on Nauru, would be first briefed on Cambodian culture and living conditions by government officials. “[The Cambodians] were taken to visit the detention centre and the refugee camp,” Rintoul said, adding that the officials did not speak directly to refugees.

Only asylum seekers processed as genuine refugees will be eligible for resettlement in Cambodia under the voluntary scheme. German Ambassador Slams Hitler Remarks | The Cambodia Daily. Germany’s ambassador to Cambodia on Friday slammed National Military Police Commander Sao Sokha for holding up the tactics of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler as an example of how to maintain social order, saying that “nobody in his right mind would ever want to refer to Hitler as a role model.” Joachim Baron von Marschall, who was appointed ambassador to Cambodia in 2013, also implored the government to approach national and public security in a manner “in line with democratic principles and contrary to the way the Nazis handled security matters.” National Military Police Commander Sao Sokha speaks to Phnom Penh governor Pa Socheatvong during the municipal military police’s annual meeting in Phnom Penh on Thursday. (Siv Channa/The Cambodia Daily) Speaking at an annual meeting of Phnom Penh’s military police on Thursday, General Sokha said he drew inspiration from the rise of Germany under Hitler in the 1930s.

“Speaking frankly, I learned from Hitler,” Gen. Contacted on Friday, Mr. Ms. Gen. Head of Cambodian police says he 'learned from Hitler' - Asia. The remarks of Cambodian Lieutenant-General Sao Sokha, also a private advisor to the country’s prime minister Hun Sen, have been condemned by human rights organisations who claim the government henchman has “blood on his hands.”

The general told reporters at a military gathering: “Speaking frankly, I learned from Hitler.” Sokha, responsible for maintaining public order and internal security, continued: “Germany, after World War I, was not allowed by the international community to have more than 100,000 soldiers, but the Nazis and Hitler did whatever so they could wage World War II,” the Cambodian Daily reported. He claimed he drew inspiration from the Nazi leaders during their rise to power in the 1930s for steering Cambodia through a tumultuous transition following the fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1975 and the accession of Hun Sen. “Absolutely” loyal to Hun Sen, who has held onto power for the past three decades, Mr Sefton claimed that Sokho “has all kinds of blood on his hands.” 1 of 20. Ited Nations News Centre - Cambodia's royal pardon for opposition leader a step towards reconciliation – UN expert.

15 July 2013 – A United Nations independent expert today welcomed Cambodia's royal pardon of opposition leader Sam Rainsy which was granted ahead of the elections in the country later this month, saying this represented an important step towards reconciliation. “I was very pleased to learn that the royal pardon was granted by His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni, the King of Cambodia, at the request of Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen,” the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, Surya P. Subedi, said. “I now hope that with this development, the Government will take the necessary action in order to allow Sam Rainsy to play a full part in the national politics of Cambodia.” Mr. Rainsy, the leader of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), was tried in absentia in January 2010 on charges of destruction of property and racial incitement and sentenced to two years' imprisonment in one case and 10 years' imprisonment in another, and had remained in exile.

Prime Minister Hun Sen announced yesterday that at least one element of the 2013 National Assembly election is a foregone conclusion – he will still be in charge when it’s over. Heng Chivoan/Phnom Penh Post Prime Minister Hun Sen casts his vote on Sunday in Phnom Penh for the national senate election. The Prime Minister is confident of the outcome. Speaking only three days after his party won control of the Senate for the third time in a row, the premier said yesterday that there is no chance he will be displaced as prime minister, given the fact that he is the only candidate. “Don’t worry; the opposition party has no possibility of breaking [the Cambodian Peoples Party],” he told a crowd at a ground-breaking ceremony inaugurating national road 76 in Ratanakkiri.

“At that time, who will be a Minister of Public Works? “So, Hun Sen, in Cambodia, the results of the election are predetermined. The four remaining seats in the Senate are appointees. Cambodia Reverses Ban on Foreign Media Reports. Cambodia has quickly reversed an order barring local radio stations from broadcasting foreign news programs before July's general election, following protests from broadcasters, the public and the United States.

The Cambodian Information Ministry late last week banned local radio stations from broadcasting content from foreign news media for 31 days prior to the July 28 election, in which Prime Minister Hun Sen will seek to extend his hold on power. The directive also ordered stations to stop carrying reports on foreigners playing any role in the campaign. However, the Information Ministry issued a statement late Saturday saying it would allow local stations to resume airing foreign-produced programs as usual. Among others, the restrictions would have affected U.S. -funded Voice of America and Radio Free Asia. A U.S. VOA and RFA programs are re-broadcast by many FM stations in Cambodia. Call to Postpone Cambodia’s Elections. Cambodia’s main opposition leader Sam Rainsy asked the authorities Wednesday to put off national elections scheduled for July, citing inconsistencies in voter registration and barring of the opposition to observe the ballot process.

“The elections need to be postponed in order to conduct genuine elections,” the exiled head of the opposition coalition National Rescue Party (NRP) told a roundtable in Washington. “We need to reestablish the voter list,” he said, adding that registration needs to better “reflect the electorate.” Cambodia’s opposition members have demanded a number of electoral reforms ahead of the elections scheduled for July 28, including a review of irregularities in voter registration lists. Sam Rainsy also criticized practices put in place to monitor voting in July, saying that only observers from the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) are allowed into polling stations to check any ballot stuffing and other forms of fraud.

Thai - Cambodian relations over their frontiers and Preah Vihear. Facing reality beats playing politics over Preah Vihear. It was a close call as far as Thailand is concerned. On the other hand, the decision by the World Heritage Committee of Unesco to delay considering Cambodia's management plan for the Preah Vihear Temple to next year must have felt to Phnom Penh like a sucker punch. A diplomatic time bomb has been defused, but barely just, and the most important question is: What's next? Blame took place in Brazil. Thailand was accused of trying to rock the boat and cling to something that no longer belongs to it. But to the Bangkok government, although the World Court ruled more than four decades and a half ago that the temple was on Cambodia's territory, things are not as simple as it looks.

The management plan, the Thai delegation in Brazil insisted, would at least refuel territorial claims around the temple because the plan incorporated some information that Bangkok did not agree on. Unesco must have been worried. But can everyone hope things will have calmed down by then? An icon fades in Cambodia. An icon fades in Cambodia By Sebastian Strangio PHNOM PENH - By uprooting six wooden border markers last October along the Vietnamese border, Cambodia's opposition leader Sam Rainsy again cast himself in the familiar role of a thorn in the flesh of authority. Earlier this year, a court sentenced Rainsy to two years in prison in absentia for uprooting the posts. He now faces additional misinformation charges that carry a possible 18 years in prison. He has been stripped of his parliamentary immunity twice in the past year.

Though his Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) remains the kingdom's biggest proponent of Western-style democracy, Rainsy's decision to go into self-imposed exile in France to continue his campaign against alleged Vietnamese incursions into Cambodian territory has raised questions whether the 61-year-old politician has lost his direction and his party its past relevance in a fast-shifting political landscape. To be sure, Rainsy has been down before only to bounce back. Cambodia Advisor (CambodiaAdvisor) Cambodge : 12 blogs à lire. In mid-February a French woman was found dead. The 25-year-old was naked and had been bludgeoned on the head. Earlier this month, 43-year-old Japanese businessman Kosei Kitakura was shot dead after being attacked by two men who tried to rob him while he was getting out of his taxi outside of his apartment on a Sunday morning. And then there was the supposed murder-suicide case of a French family in September 2011. Cambodian police had already decided that life had become too much for 42-year-old Frenchman Laurent Vallier, who they claimed had killed his four young children, before driving their bodies into a pond behind the family home where he drowned. For several weeks the French team carried out forensic tests at the site. World | Cambodian town gets first textbook of atrocities.
