This morning I shared an old post about Fotobabble on the Free Technology for Teachers Facebook page. In response to that post Stewart Whitney shared his experience of using the Fotobabble iPhone app. Stewart's comment got me to try the Fotobabble iOS app. Fotobabble is a free service that allows you to quickly turn a picture into an audio picture story.

Using Fotoabble is easy, just upload an image to Fotobabble, allow Fotobabble to access your computer's microphone, and start recording your voice. You can comment on your photo, explain what's happening your photo, or tell a story related to your photo. Applications for Education The Fotobable iOS app could be a great app for students to use to quickly create short audio stories about pictures that they take with their iPhones and or iPads (the app isn't optimized for iPad, but it works on it).

To the Authentic Assessment Toolbox, a how-to text on creating authentic tasks, rubrics, and standards for measuring and improving student learning. Inside, you will find chapters on A good place to start -- In this chapter I identify the characteristics, strengths and limitations of authentic assessment; compare and contrast it with traditional (test-based) assessment.

Why has authentic assessment become more popular in recent years? When can it best serve assessment needs? After a brief overview, follow a detailed, four-step process for creating an authentic assessment. All good assessment begins with standards: statements of what we want our students to know and be able to do. Authentic assessments are often called "tasks" because they include real-world applications we ask students to perform.

To assess the quality of student work on authentic tasks, teachers develop rubrics, or scoring scales. A guide to constructing good, multiple-choice tests, to complement your authentic assessments. By Wayne D'Orio Here’s a riddle: Imagine there is a learning technique proven effective through 100 years of use that is now enhanced by the power of today’s technology.

Imagine it can excite learners to continue their work well past the parameters of the school day. What is it, and would every school in the country do it? It is project-based learning, and the answer is yes, and no. Project-based learning can be traced back to John Dewey and it has come and gone since the early 20th century. As a pedagogical method, it often meets resistance since it doesn’t fit the skill-and-drill model that typically dominates education. But today, it is enjoying a comeback as cutting-edge schools demonstrate just how effectively it imparts the skills students need in today’s workforce. Why Project-Based Learning? While project-based learning can be decidedly low tech, the recent surge of interest has been driven by the increase in technology capabilities in public schools. What Makes a Great Project? Twenty Ideas for Engaging Projects. The start of the school year offers an ideal time to introduce students to project-based learning.

By starting with engaging projects, you'll grab their interest while establishing a solid foundation of important skills, such as knowing how to conduct research, engage experts, and collaborate with peers. In honor of Edutopia's 20th anniversary, here are 20 project ideas to get learning off to a good start. 1. Abstract This paper describes a framework for teacher knowledge for technology integration called technological pedagogical content knowledge (originally TPCK, now known as TPACK, or technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge).

This framework builds on Lee Shulman’s construct of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) to include technology knowledge. The development of TPACK by teachers is critical to effective teaching with technology. The paper begins with a brief introduction to the complex, ill-structured nature of teaching. The nature of technologies (both analog and digital) is considered, as well as how the inclusion of technology in pedagogy further complicates teaching. Citation Koehler, M. & Mishra, P. (2009). In a world where rapid advances in technology have a profound impact on the ways we work, communicate and live, education has struggled to keep pace. The ISTE Standards work together to support educators, students and leaders with clear guidelines for the skills and knowledge necessary to move away from the factory model.

These are not the typical boxes educators need to check. They provide a framework for rethinking education, adapting to a constantly changing technological landscape and preparing students to enter an increasingly global economy. Empowering connected learners in a connected world As educators, we are preparing students for a future that we cannot yet imagine. Want to know more? How can the ISTE Standards be used? Creating Social Media Guidelines A Guidebook for Social Media in the Classroom, by Vicki Davis (2014) Davis, in the first half of a pro-and-con discussion about social media in the classroom, positions it as a vital life skill and provides 12 positive examples of classroom use.

For the second half of the discussion, read this post by Ben Johnson: "Too Much Technology and Not Enough Learning? " The Digital Lives of Teens: What Time Is It? Now! By Matt Levinson (2013) In this first installment of his Digital Lives of Teens series, Levinson considers the problem of translating the teenage urgency of 'always on' into the mindfulness of 'being present.' Prensky's Digital Nativism With an insulting tone worthy of the original American nativists who hated immigrants (especially Catholic ones), Marc Prensky speaks of pre-iPod humans (digital immigrants) contemptuously.

(Prensky's work) In a rather shallow piece lacking in evidence or data, Prensky offers the terms "digital natives" and "digital immigrants" to set up a generational divide. His proposition is simple-minded. He paints digital experience as wonderful and old ways as worthless. He lumps people together by nothing more than age and exposure, spending little time on differentiating or understanding. He offers learning with video games as a digital Nirvana that should replace forms of learning that he claims are now outmoded. Prensky's Brave New World of Video Game Learning It is amusing to note Prensky's unbridled enthusiasm for learning via video games. John Hunter: Teaching with the World Peace Game. Project Based Learning Article - Ashley Adams Portfolio. I chose to read an article from the Explore Examples that Work list. The article was named Getting Started with Project Based Learning. This article appealed to me because when we were given the PBL project, I was not really sure where to begin.

After reading the article, I had a better idea of how to approach the project. Quote 1: "In PBL, you are teaching through the project, not teaching and then doing the project. " This quote was of the utmost importance in the article. In project based learning experiences, you want your student experiencing thing hand-on and for themselves and through those experiences they should be learning. Quote 2 "PBL emphasizes in-depth inquiry over coverage. " This quote stood out to me because when we were deciding what to cover in our Project Based Learning experience, I wasn't sure if focusing on the moon's phases and effects on Earth would be enough for the project. When you have a presentation to make, it's tempting to ask yourself right away, "What am I going to say? How much information can I fit into the allotted time? Which visuals should I use? " So, you may immediately dive into the process of selecting material, developing an outline, creating slides and rehearsing content. Although these steps are important, you risk heading off in the wrong direction unless you first consider the most important element of your presentation – the audience. As an effective presenter, your first step toward making a powerful, persuasive presentation is to define your audience.

Defining your audience means finding out who they are. The following questions serve as a helpful guide for defining the people of your audience. What are their professional roles, titles and responsibilities? By asking these questions and customizing your presentation based upon the answers, you show the participants that you know them and want the presentation to benefit them. 1. Author: Jeff Durham - Updated: 15 September 2012| Comment There’s an old saying that goes “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” and, whether you believe that or not, the same principle cannot be applied to humans.

In fact, adults can learn just as easily as children but there are several basic differences between what works effectively for adults and what works best for children. Experience Of Life As an adult, you’ll have had far more experience of life in general than a child and whilst this can help an adult more than a child when it comes to learning, it can also hinder them and a child’s lesser experiences can occasionally prove more beneficial. How Adults And Children Use Different Techniques For Learning For an adult learner, their experiences of life will have been far more vast and diverse than that of a child’s and their brain’s maturity will enable them to apply their learning through relating it to certain experiences they’ve had.
