Naturally Embed UDL in No Time. By Elizabeth Stein The teacher life is a busy life, no question. Since my last post about integrating the Universal Design for Learning approach into instructional planning and teaching, I’ve received some predictable questions: “How do teachers find the time to do all that?” Or simple, flat statements like: “I don’t have time for that.” Case closed, right? • My district has not adopted a formal UDL framework (yet–>grin<) • Most public school teachers where I teach and across the United States are swept up in the instructional shifts brought on by the Common Core. . • Most teachers either do not know about UDL or they feel they do not have the time for it based on what little they do know. • The lesson outline you are about to see was planned with a focus on the Common Core — the thought of including UDL strategies was not on my co-teacher’s mind.

UDL is not about causing change. Last week I listed some of what I noticed going on in my inclusion classrooms. Assessment: Teaching Kids to Code. Every era demands--and rewards--different skills. In different times and different places, we have taught our children to grow vegetables, build a house, forge a sword or blow a delicate glass, bake bread, create a soufflé, write a story or shoot hoops. Now we are teaching them to code. We are teaching them to code, however, not so much as an end in itself but because our world has morphed: so many of the things we once did with elements such as fire and iron, or tools such as pencil and paper, are now wrought in code.

We are teaching coding to help our kids craft their future. In this collection we share many different perspectives on coding, from a university professor's vantage point (MIT's Mitch Resnick describes why learning to code is like learning to learn) to an entrepreneur's reflections from his cross-country roadtrip to bring coding--and his stuffed dog--to classrooms across the U.S. We should always teach children to bake bread, feed the goats and wield a hammer. Learn To Code, Code To Learn. Is it important for all children to learn how to write? After all, very few children grow up to become journalists, novelists, or professional writers. So why should everyone learn to write? Of course, such questions seem silly. People use writing in all parts of their lives: to send birthday messages to friends, to jot down shopping lists, to record personal feelings in diaries. The act of writing also engages people in new ways of thinking.

I see coding (computer programming) as an extension of writing. The recent surge of interest in learning to code, reflected in sites like and, has focused especially on job and career opportunities. But I see much deeper and broader reasons for learning to code. Six years ago, my research group at the MIT Media Lab launched the Scratch programming language and online community in an effort to make coding accessible and appealing to everyone.

We’ve been amazed with the diversity and creativity of the projects. The Best PowerPoint Alternatives for Creating Great Presentations. How Important is Grit in Student Achievement? Culture Teaching Strategies When it comes to high achievement, grit may be as essential as intelligence.

By Emily Hanford, American RadioWorks Before she was a psychology professor, Angela Duckworth taught math in middle school and high school. She spent a lot of time thinking about something that might seem obvious: The students who tried hardest did the best, and the students who didn’t try very hard didn’t do very well. Duckworth wanted to know: What is the role of effort in a person’s success?

Now Duckworth is an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and her research focuses on a personality trait she calls “grit.” Duckworth’s research suggests that when it comes to high achievement, grit may be as essential as intelligence. “Which experiences do we give kids to get them in the direction of more grit and not less?” Intelligence “is probably the best-measured trait that there is in all of human psychology,” says Duckworth.

But intelligence leaves a lot unexplained. Learning To Ask The Right Question. Learners Should Be Developing Their Own Essential Questions. Having essential questions drive curriculum and learning has become core to many educators’ instructional practices. Grant Wiggins, in his work on Understanding By Design, describes an essential question as: A meaning of “essential” involves important questions that recur throughout one’s life. Such questions are broad in scope and timeless by nature. They are perpetually arguable – What is justice? Is art a matter of taste or principles? How far should we tamper with our own biology and chemistry? Is science compatible with religion? Although essential questions are powerful advance organizers and curriculum drivers, the problem is that the essential questions are typically developed by the educator not the learners.

Jamie McKenzie describes what actually happens in most schools and classrooms in terms of questioning. There have always been plenty of questions in schools, but most of them have come from the teacher, often at the rate of one question every 2-3 seconds. Like this: Vision Boards For Kids. The impossible has been obtained in this globe mainly due to the objectives and experienced concepts and objectives of so-called mavericks. Having a desire, be it to fight social injustices or to journey through space, has allowed humans to create the globe a better place to live in and to discover the secret that is life and beyond. Motivating learners to have little or big objectives, picturing and success stories is a great addiction to teach during the university years. Care needs to be taken not to pressurize or operate learners towards a certain path. A natural studying approach needs to be followed to be able for the undergraduate to extend his/her capabilities and have extensive thoughts and objectives.

A wonderful way to motivate learners to have objectives is by assisting the creating of a desire panel. The following are a few recommendations on how to go about assisting this activity.
