The hoard was discovered by Bavarian authorities in 2012, following suspicions that Gurlitt was evading taxes. Nearly 600 works from the collection are suspected to be of questionable provenance, possibly Nazi loot.

The masterpiece of German Reformation-era art will be unveiled on Reformation Day, October 31st The altar in the UNESCO-listed Stadtkirche is regarded as the premier Reformation-era altar from the studio of Lucas Cranach the elder (1472-1553). It was completed by Lucas Cranach the younger (1515-1586) two years after his father’s death. According to Heinrich Herbst, superintendent of the city of Weimar, Friday will mark the first time in decades that the altar will be shown in its entirety. The late Gothic Church was destroyed during World War II and was reconstructed between 1948–1953.

Natali Cohen Vaxberg, the Israeli artist who made waves last summer when she shared a video of herself defecating on Israel’s national flag, has been placed under house arrest.
Cohen Vaxberg was detained for questioning last Sunday. She is confined to her residence in Tel Aviv and has been banned from using the Internet for 30 days, as a result of defiling a national symbol, a police spokeswoman said. She also said they are still deciding whether to press charges. Vatican Museums chief in art deal probe. The head of the Vatican Museums, Antonio Paolucci, has been put under investigation for alleged abuse of office over contracts awarded while he ran Florence’s top museums, including the world-famous Uffizi Gallery.
The investigation focuses on a 2006 deal to insure works of art which were sent abroad for international exhibitions. The contracts were allegedly awarded to insurance company Axa-art, allegedly without the necessary call for tenders for deals over €50,000. Paolucci signed the contract which was later approved by the new director of Florence Museums (Polo Museale Fiorentino), Cristina Acidini. The Polo Museale Fiorentino sites include the Uffizi Gallery, Palazzo Pitti and the Accademia Gallery which houses Michelangelo’s David statue. A second investigation is underway into the low prices allegedly offered to hire the Boboli Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for classical music concerts. Both are accused of not carrying out the required tendering process when initiating an insurance contract for the transport of artworks abroad, which would have allowed other firms to bid for the business. The contract under scrutiny was agreed upon by AXA Art and Paolucci in the fall of 2006 before Paolucci’s transfer to Rome. It was later confirmed by Acidini. If the allegations prove true, the agreement would breach European rules, which require a tendering process for any insurance contract exceeding €50,000.
