DotSpots had a very noble mission, not to mention the coolest logo on earth. We wanted to save the newspaper industry by allowing the wisdom of crowds (bloggers and citizen journalists) to enhance every news story with eyewitness accounts, alternative perspectives and additional content and context, thereby bringing more engagement for the publishers, and more insight for readers. We built an unbelievably sophisticated platform to allow this collaboration to take place… and we gave it all away for free, hoping that we'd be able to hit a critical mass, around which we could then build a business model. iCyte: Annotation Tool To Highlight, Bookmark, Store Web Pages
iCyte is a web annotation utility that lets you highlight and save text to any webpage. The service can be used to research topics of interest, collaborate on projects with friends and coworkers, and share information with others. There’s currently a number of web annotation utilities that offer the ability to markup websites but iCyte believes it provides the best solution. Other notable webpage markup utilities include Diigo , DotSpots , Annotate , and WebNotes . If you’re ever bookmarked a webpage using your browser or favorite social bookmarking site only to later discover that the URL for that bookmark no longer works, then you’ve already identified the main problem associated with link-only based archival systems. iCyte attempts to prevent such content loss by not just saving the link but the entire web page to its own servers as well as any comments you attach to the original content.
In 1999, Eng-Sion Tan and two friends launched Third Voice, a browser plugin that would let anyone make annotations on webpages. The intent was to encourage freer speech on the internet, but many slammed it as “Web Graffiti.” The company eventually shut down.
