How it's Implemented - Transatlantic Fiber Optics. Previously, transatlantic cable connections were done through interconnect agreements, where multiple companies worked together to bring their customers data from the other side of the Atlantic. Today, a growing number of private corporations are building their own networks of fiber optics in order to lease the cables out to the highest bidder, including stock trading firms. It will be able to transmit data round-trip between the two cities in 59.6 milliseconds, slightly faster than its competitor, Hibernia Atlantic’s, top speed of 64.8 milliseconds. It took seven months for Project Express to determine that the path they chose was the shortest viable path for their fiber optic cable.
The cable is laid in the continental shelf, which is more vulnerable to outside forces, like fishing damage or interference by sea life. Once the hot water or steam travels up the wells to the surface, it can be used to generate electricity in geothermal power plants or for energy saving non-electrical purposes.
