I was hoping the title of this talk would scare away everyone who shouldn't be here. Obviously I should have made up a scarier title... Perl meets Godzilla? Bambi meets Perl? I just did an interview for Feed Magazine. By the way, I'm planning to leave some amount of time at the end for Q and A, so you should start thinking about the Q part while I'm talking. When I was invited to talk here, it occurred to me that most of the people here would be more interested in Linux than in Perl, so, in the interests of universal harmonic convergence, I thought I should talk about both Perl and Linux.

Here it goes. I hate how being harsh has become fashionable. Whatever happened to manners? This spontaneous reaction was in response to a blog that attempted to be humorous by using the word “fucking” multiple times in reference to Adobe’s UIs which were perceived as lacking a native look and feel. I stand behind those words. It’s worth caring about this toxic environment, where nastiness and negativity are not only tolerated but to a certain extent encouraged, because of its effects on the community. By simply fast-forwarding one or two days, we find Michael Arrington’s emotional article about an upsetting encounter with a conference attendee who spat on him, only to quickly leave, hiding himself in the crowd.
