Kaleidoscope | Migrated Rhythm: The Tambú of Curaçao by Rene V.

The slaves that were shipped from Africa to the New World, to serve as workers on plantations, took their (musical) culture with them, if only in their minds. In their new homelands they recreated their secular and religious music and dance, which for them were essential forms of expression to enable them to forget their sorrows, to help create social solidarity, and to make contact with their gods. The tambú of Curaçao (Dutch Antilles) is an example of this cultural continuity. The use of percussion instruments, such as the drum and iron idiophones, antiphony, polyrhythm, the pentatonic scale, and the poly- movement of the dance, are all African in origin. The Tambú

In December 2007, a unique musical band, Fanatik, was formed under the direction of Cornell “Fingers” Phillip. Unique, in that the band is, to all intents and purposes, a concert band, presenting a varied musical repertoire including Caribbean popular forms as well as R&B, Jazz, Rock, Country and Pop. Simply put, Fanatik can and has put together an astounding repertoire that suite any event, from any nationality, any genre of music. From its inaugural performance on 19th December 2007 at a Fund Raising Dinner, they set the pace of being a dynamic band which captivates audiences with their energy, ...
The drums were developed on the Caribbean island of Trinidad during the early years of the 20th century. Old rubbish tins, car parts and stolen garbage can lids formed the first "Iron Bands", which led to the realization that a dented section of a barrel head could produce a musical tone. Careful refinement of this amazing discovery produced the modern Steel Drum instrument and the large orchestral Steel Drum Bands, a deserved source of great national pride! http://www.toucans.net/pan_history.html

Kompa is a musical genre as well as a dance that originated in Haïti. The name is derived from compas , the Spanish word meaning rhythm or tone. Sung in Haïtian Creole/Patois, Kompa is a uniquely Haïtian musical form, however it does closely share musical attributes in common with it's neighbors; Dominican Merengue, Cuban Son, Puerto Rican Bomba, and West African/Caribbean Highlife/Calypso. Typically Kompa can be recognized by it's fast paced rhythm driven by a trap set (heavy use of symbols and snares), congas, tambourine and guiro. The music is commonly arranged around a verse and chorus pattern which alternates between major and minor keys for each section. Swift staccato or arpeggiated double guitar backing is another trademark of the genre with the solo instrument of choice being some sort of single reeded soundsource; usually saxophone, harmonica, accordion/concertina or electronically synthesized versions fo these instruments. http://ethnomusic.podomatic.com/entry/2007-10-15T05_44_18-07_00
Dub poetry is a form of performance poetry of West Indian origin, [ 1 ] which evolved out of dub music consisting of spoken word over reggae rhythms in Jamaica in the 1970s [ citation needed ] . Unlike Dee Jaying (also known as Toasting ), which also features the use of the spoken word, the Dub Poet's performance is normally prepared, rather than the extemporized chat of the Dancehall Dee Jay. In musical settings; the Dub Poet usually appears on stage with a band performing music specifically written to accompany each poem, rather than simply perform over the top of dub plates, or riddims , in the Dancehall fashion. Musicality is built into Dub poems, yet, Dub Poets generally perform without backing music, delivering chanted speech with pronounced rhythmic accentuation and dramatic stylization of gesture. Sometimes dub music effects, e.g. echo, reverb, are dubbed spontaneously by a poet into live versions of a poem.

http://www.uky.edu/~cecilia/MUSIC/Caribbean/ CARIBBEAN HISTORY : The Caribbean Islands have a very uinique and interesting history. The Islands were founded by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Columbus named the Islands after the Caribs, a cannibalistic, warlike tribe of Indians who inhabited the Islands. In the 1700's the economy of the Islands was based on Sugar Plantations. The plantation owners were wealthy European or American immigrants, with the primary laborers being slaves from Africa, and freed Creole slaves who came to the Islands looking for work as bondsmen. After the slaves were freed, the planation owners tried using indentured servants to work their land, but because they treates these servants no better than slaves, this practice did not last very long.

Barbados Jazz Festival - 2010

First of all, on behalf of GMR International Tours Inc., the producers of the Barbados Jazz Festival let me formally place on record our sincere appreciation for the support which it has received from all sponsors during the 18 years of its existence. As you may recall, it was in 1993 that the first Barbados Jazz Festival made its debut as a tourism product designed primarily to attract visitors and diversify the product offering to visitors. In both of these objectives the evidence shows that the Festival has been successful. Over the years it has grown from an event over the Martin Luther King weekend to a cultural experience that fed and nurtured the art form at the local level.
