apophenia: Putting Privacy Settings in the Context of Use (in Fa

A few days ago, Gilad’s eyes opened wide and he called me over to look at his computer. He was on Facebook and he had just discovered a privacy loophole. He had maximized his newsfeed to get as many photo-related bits as possible. As a result, he was regularly informed when his Friends commented on other people’s photos, including photos of people with whom he was not Friends or in the same network as. This is all fine and well.
StumbleUpon is a pretty unique site as far as social browsing sites go; no site with a similar concept (i.e. one click ‘random’ surfing through sites recommended by the community) has reached anywhere near its level of popularity. However, unlike – for example – Digg or Delicious, it requires users to do one extra step: install a browser plugin, which is something many users look down upon. Not any longer. StumbleUpon now offers a Web toolbar, which is basically a (relatively) unobtrusive frame at the top of the webpage, with the full functionality of the browser plugin. To use it, just go to the StumbleUpon homepage and click on a link. You can stumble sites (category stumbling is also available), rate them, send them to friends and read comments – all without installing anything. http://mashable.com/2008/10/01/stumbleupon-browser-plugin/

Facebook Applications Now Portable to Friendster’s Dev

http://mashable.com/2008/10/02/port-facebook-apps-to-friendster/ Friendster might not be the first name in social networking in the US, but in Asia it’s the dominant player in many countries, with a userbase totaling more than 60 million across the continent. Today, the company is announcing that Facebook applications can now be easily ported into Friendster – who already has its own developer platform and also supports OpenSocial. This could be attractive to Facebook developers for a number of reasons, especially considering the negative impact that the site’s recent re-design is having on usage for some applications.
I’m an avid Facebook user, and I love some of the more recent features, especially the Live Feed and the Chat . The first gives me a great, thorough overview of what my friends have been doing lately, while a solid portion of my chatting (of which I do a lot) has moved to Facebook. However, these features have now been out for more than a couple of month, and unfortunatelly they’re still buggy as hell . The Live Feed is laggy .

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/01/sony-dont-turn-on-your-ps3-until-psn-bug-is-fixed/ Uh, wow . That PlayStation Network issue that struck late last night has officially ballooned into a full-on PlayStation disaster: Sony is now saying you shouldn't use "fat" PS3 models at all , since a clock-related bug might cause data loss. The PS3 slim isn't affected, however -- which explains some of the conflicting reports we heard last night. Sony says they're working to get this fixed in the next 24 hours, but for now it looks like older PS3 owners are out of luck -- we'll do our best to keep you entertained, guys.
