Alfred Tennyson, 1er baron Tennyson (6 août 1809 – 6 octobre 1892), frère de Charles Tennyson Turner, est l'un des poètes britanniques les plus célèbres de l'époque victorienne. Vie[modifier | modifier le code] Jeunesse[modifier | modifier le code] Au printemps 1831, le père de Tennyson mourut, forçant celui-ci à quitter Cambridge avant l'obtention de son diplôme. Il retourna au rectorat, où il fut autorisé à vivre six autres années, et prit la charge de sa mère et de ses nombreux enfants. Poète[modifier | modifier le code] En 1833, Tennyson publia son deuxième livre de poésie, qui contenait son poème le plus connu, La Lady de Shalott, l'histoire d'une princesse qui ne peut être vue du monde, hormis à travers le reflet d'un miroir. En 1842, tandis qu'il vivait modestement à Londres, Tennyson publia deux volumes de Poèmes, le premier incluant des textes déjà publiés et le second étant composé entièrement de nouveaux poèmes.

Throughout his writing, Browning aims at delving deep into the psyche of his frantic characters, analyzing their innermost psychology, and engaging in cultural criticism all at once. Tennyson's writing, on the other hand, selects external specific realities, ideas, and objects, morphing them into toys of our imagination, through creating miniature allegories and parables, some of which holding characteristics of a dramatic monologue. Finally, both poets made great use of the dramatic monologue technique, isolating themselves from their characters, nevertheless mouthing their ideas through them, and oftentimes inducing a sense of unease and intrigue in the reader. Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, FRS (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892) was Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during much of Queen Victoria's reign and remains one of the most popular British poets.[2] Early life[edit] Tennyson was born in Somersby.[4] He was born into a middle-class line of Tennysons, but also had a noble and royal ancestry.[5] His father, George Clayton Tennyson (1778–1831), was rector of Somersby (1807–1831), also rector of Benniworth and Bag Enderby, and vicar of Grimsby (1815).

Rev. George Clayton Tennyson raised a large family and "was a man of superior abilities and varied attainments, who tried his hand with fair success in architecture, painting, music, and poetry.
