New ad alert: TripAdvisor rolls out new travel advertising product. UPDATE: TripAdvisor’s Martin Verdon-Roe has responded directly to Tnooz, regarding what this means for TripAdvisor moving forward. It means that not only are our ads more trustworthy but the performance for the clients has also improved. CTR is up and we have also implemented a tracking technology for “viewability” and that is not showing that the Ads below the fold are now just as valuable as those above. In fact the ones below are now producing a stronger viewability metric compared to the 728×90 which is at the top of the page. This then leads us down new avenues and opportunities. E.g. can we find areas below the fold with high user dwell time. We can put advertising placements there in the confidence that we will get great user exposures but only when the users actually get there. This helps the advertisers performance and allows the sales team to find new impressions on TA that otherwise would have been unsellable.

A spokesperson for IAB UK lauded the move in the announcement: Why TripAdvisor's Expedia juice won't last forever, in one chart. In November 2011, TripAdvisor was spun off from Expedia Inc., yet the young company continues to suckle at the teat of its mother. But hard financial realities will push TRIP into becoming truly independent.

In 2012, Expedia-related revenue accounted for 26.7% of TripAdvisor revenues, down from 33% in 2011—based what TripAdvisor discloses in its quarterly filings. In absolute numbers, the company also registered a decline, with related-party revenue from Expedia totaling $203.8 million in 2012, a drop of 3%, compared with 2011. What impact does the Expedia strategic partnership have on TripAdvisor? “Net neutral now,” says Dan Su, a senior equity analyst with Morningstar, who last month wrote a report on the company for paying members of the site. Su tells Tnooz: TripAdvisor will remain an important market channel for Expedia, although Expedia as a percentage of revenue will probably continue to decline.I don’t expect any material change in the relationship though.

How to Manage Review Blackmail. I’ve written about Social Media Coercion and Social Media Ambush in the past, and it continues to be a hot topic. Whether engaging in a bit of harmless social media strong-arming or outright blackmail, it seems that more consumers these days are flexing their social media muscle to exact special treatment from businesses. If the customer is being mistreated, then fair game. I’ve done it myself. When a client wasn’t paying a bill, after months of chasing and broken promises I warned him that if he didn’t pay up I’d feel obliged to share the experience in a review.

Ironically, I had helped his company with a reputation problem, and this certainly wasn’t going to help his cause. Like magic, payment arrived by PayPal within hours. Social media has empowered consumers, and that’s a good thing. Do we really want to reward such behavior? The good news is, we’re far from helpless. So that’s what you can do after the incident.
