The Long and Winding Road: The 1995 Magic World Championships :

http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/25a Seattle, Wash. —You could tell just from watching Henry Stern walk across the room that he had far more energy than he was able to contain. Quickly scooting past various Magic duels in progress, Stern exited the room where the tournament was being held.
Note: we don't have complete records of the decklists from 1995. Here's what we were able to piece together from various sources, including a post on Usenet from Henry Stern Still wondering what was in everyone's deck? Well, we've got a little game for you.

"I really didn't believe I could win," said Blumke, the 26-year-old Geneva resident. "I didn't have a deck when I got here, so I stayed up late the night before making one. Then the next morning, I realized that what I made would not win, so I changed it right before the competition." When asked what surprised him most about becoming world champion, Blumke replied, "I didn't think I could do it. http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/25d

An M:TGer at Gen Con : Daily MTG : Magic: The Gathering

I was quite young the first time I heard the GenCon legend. Gamers of all types would flock to this mythical gathering each August in a far off land called Milwaukee. Once there, they would huddle en masse, sharing stories, games, and the occasional meal or two. And for four days, the world would cease to exist. Now, I'm what's considered a Magic TM "old timer." When I started over a year ago, there was no Circle of Protection: Black , Moxes were just another rare artifact, and everyone traded Alpha cards freely (they hadn't even become "Alpha" yet).

We are celebrating the World Championships because later this week the sixteenth one will be held in Rome, Italy. This Worlds is a bittersweet one for me as it breaks my streak. Up until this week, I was the only person on Earth to have attended every single Magic: The Gathering World Championships.

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/feature/226 en years ago, the first Magic: the Gathering World Championship was held at GenCon '94. It was the biggest Magic tournament yet: 512 people filled a hall and played Single-Elimination for three days until a single player stood above them all: Zak Dolan became the first World Champion of Magic . In honor of the tenth anniversary of this historic tournament, we've put together a collection of articles from the time: from Duelist #3 we've got an article by Mark Rosewater from before he was a Wizards of the Coast employee, when he was a wide-eyed Magic player, roaming the halls of his first Gen Con. Mark describes what it was like back when The Dark was new and it seemed like every company at the convention was launching a new Trading Card Game to compete with Magic . He also covers his own experience playing in the main event (Yes!

During the finals, a shockingly young-looking Mark Rosewater keeps careful track of everything Zak Dolan does. The person immediately behind Mark is Jim Lin, who would go on to become the Vice-President of R&D. Former editor of the Duelist Companion Rhias Hall is barely visible behind the video camera on the right. At the first World Championship, there was a lot of trading. Here, someone's trade binder has been left open to the page with two Black Lotuses and six Moxes.
