Western Interior Seaway (WIKI) [EN] Western Interior Seaway during the mid-Cretaceous, about 100 million years ago Origin and geology[edit] The Seaway was created as the Farallon tectonic plate subducted under the North American Plate during the Cretaceous.

As plate convergence proceeded, the younger and more buoyant lithosphere of the Farallon Plate subducted at a shallow angle, in what is known as a "flat slab". Flora Hell Creek [EN] Floodplains [CZ] Sinornithosaurus (WIKI) [EN] Xu Xing described Sinornithosaurus and performed a phylogenetic analysis which demonstrated that it is basal, or primitive, among the dromaeosaurs.[3] He has also demonstrated that features of the skull and shoulder are very similar to Archaeopteryx and other Avialae.

Together these two facts demonstrate that the earliest dromaeosaurs were more like birds than the later dromaeosaurs were. Sinornithosaurus was among the smallest dromaeosaurids, with a length of about 90 centimetres (3.0 ft).[4] In 2010, Gregory S. WTH is …Hell Creek? [CZ] ….aneb Něco málo o svrchnokřídovém souvrství Již od mé první zmínky o odletu do Montany se v příspěvcích na blogu objevoval záhadný pojem Hell Creek.

Až téměř měsíc po příletu se však konečně dostávám k jeho zpracování také na stránkách blogu. Pravda, několik vágních slov typu „proslulé geologické souvrství svrchnokřídového stáří“ se tu již dříve objevilo, těžko však poskytuje dostatečně zevrubnou představu. Proto ještě jednou a poněkud podrobněji – co je vlastně ten zatrolený Hell Creek? Hell Creek je název v současnosti velmi intenzivně studovaného geologického souvrství, které dostalo název přímo od objevitele druhu Tyrannosaurus rex, amerického paleontologa Barnuma Browna. Nejrozšířenější výchozy jsou právě ve východní Montaně, souvrství Hell Creek však nacházíme také v Severní i Jižní Dakotě a Wyomingu. Metasequoia (WIKI) [EN] Metasequoia (dawn redwood) is a fast-growing, deciduous tree, and the sole living species, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, is one of three species of conifers known as redwoods.

It is native to Lichuan county in the Hubei province of China. Although the least tall of the redwoods, it grows to at least 200 feet (60 meters) in height. Local villagers refer to the original tree from which most others derive as Shui-sa, or "water fir", which is part of a local shrine. Since that tree's rediscovery in 1944, the dawn redwood has become a popular ornamental.

Together with Sequoia sempervirens (coast redwood) and Sequoiadendron giganteum (giant sequoia) of California, Metasequoia is classified in the Cupressaceae subfamily Sequoioideae. Paleontology[edit] Large petrified trunks and stumps of the extinct Metasequoia occidentalis (sometimes identified as Sequoia occidentalis) also make up the major portion of Tertiary fossil plant material in the badlands of western North Dakota.

Hell Creek Formation (WIKI) [EN] It is a series of fresh and brackish-water clays, mudstones, and sandstones deposited during the Maastrichtian and Danian (respectively the end of the Cretaceous period and the beginning of the Paleogene) by fluvial activity in fluctuating river channels and deltas and very occasional peaty swamp deposits along the low-lying eastern continental margin fronting the late Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway.

The climate was mild, and the presence of crocodilians suggests a sub-tropical climate, with no prolonged annual cold. The famous iridium-enriched Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary, which separates the Cretaceous from the Cenozoic, occurs as a discontinuous but distinct thin marker bedding above and occasionally within the formation, near its boundary with the overlying Fort Union Formation.
