Emergence – Part 1 – Why is this idea important? « Power Up Proj. Beyond disrupting organizations and value as we know it, what is going to be the deep result of the use of Social Media? Many of us see it as at least making organizations more effective – faster, more informed etc. But I wonder. My growing feeling is that the widespread use of Social Media might soon enable us to gain the benefit of “Emergence”. What you might ask is “Emergence”. Here is an example of how each of us as humans acquire the scale free use of language: Let me explain – I have a one year old grand daughter now so I am re living all of this. How does this happen? One more example. An oak tree produces many acorns. Now here is a vital insight, once it gets to a certain size, it gets very robust and only man cutting it down with a saw or a big fire will prevent it from growing further and living a long time.

There is more. Under the right environmental circumstances, one tree will lead to another until there is a small wood. I am not clear about the ideal factors for Oak Trees. A Manifesto for the Social Organization. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance . Alan Watts We are living in a time of massive, rapid, profound change. The music that surrounds us is becoming ever more rich, complex, and dissonant, as climate, ecological, economic, organizational, legislative, technological, and demographic change add their intertwining melodies to the song. We need to be more organizationally agile than ever before to stay in the dance. Facebook, Twitter, Meetup, YouTube, Ning, LinkedIn, cellphones. Venessa Miemis’ Twitter bio describes her as a “Metacog, futurist and thought architect tracking emerging media and technology trends & impacts.”

A futurist’s view of the “next big thing” in social media

Now THAT got my attention. Currently pursuing a masters degree in New Media Studies at the New School in NYC, she has been passionately thinking and writing about the future for seven years. Venessa kindly agreed to an interview and I found her views on the connections between social media and education, politics, global community and our future to be one of the most thought-provoking posts I’ve featured here on {grow}. I think you’ll agree: What is a futurist and how do I get a job like that? A futurist’s role is to help people anticipate, plan for, and adapt to change. At the professional level, futurists are hired by organizations to help them understand the forces and trends shaping their industries, and anticipate the changing needs and desires of their customers in order to stay competitive.

Ha, well I think you hit on some great themes.
