Huffington Post Co-Founder Ken Lerer Launching Video News Service - Peter Kafka - Media. Ken Lerer helped build an Internet news powerhouse out of thin air. Now he wants to do it again. The Huffington Post co-founder, who sold his site to AOL a year ago, is working on another Web news start-up. But Lerer isn’t trying to replicate his old site.

Instead, he’s trying to create a digital video news operation built to attract a generation of Web natives who watch Jon Stewart but not CNN or Fox News. People who have heard Lerer pitch the start-up say he has been vague about the details but broad about his ambitions. There are plenty of other folks trying to figure out how bring TV-style news to the Web, including the TV people themselves. (Image courtesy of Shutterstock/Daboost) Can employers demand Facebook passwords. If you were out pounding beers and tacos with your crew 'til 2 a.m., should a potential employer be able to know about it? Or, better question, if you're gay should a potential employer be able to know about it? It's all part of the same debate going on right now looping together Facebook, the feds, and possibly, your future employment.

An increasing number of employers are reportedly starting to ask job applicants to hand over their Facebook passwords so they can get a more accurate and filter-free idea of what the potential new hire is all about, USA Today reports. But a pair of senators alarmed at the reported practice have asked the Justice Department to investigate its legality. Requesting an applicant's password is going a pretty hefty step further than the more common practice of employers simply checking out your profile, critics say. That is, of course, if it's even legal to do so. And they're bringing some friends to the fight as well: Facebook. Bianca Bosker: Debunking the Big Gang Theory: Why Facebook and Others Suffer From Being Big. Of the top 39 stories that appeared in my Facebook feed on a recent afternoon, 11 were from brands, nine were from people I wasn't interested in hearing from, and 13 from people I couldn't for the life of me remember. In short, it was a mess -- a cacophony of noise from people whom I barely know, whose actions and opinions have little bearing on my life, and whom I have a minor interest in keeping up with.

I don't much care for their music recommendations and I'm not dying for their restaurant tips. It wasn't always this way. When it first launched, a then much smaller Facebook provided an online extension for offline relationships. The social network offered a way of keeping tabs on the classmate down the hall and the neighbor next door, people whom we cared about and whose activities online would influence our behavior offline. Then I became friends with teammates' siblings and friends of friends I hadn't met, but felt obliged to follow. Attracting users is the easy part. Inbox-Sanity Tool Boomerang Hits 1 Million Downloads. More than one million people have downloaded Boomerang for Gmail, an inbox extension that helps schedule outgoing email messages and allows users to re-receive important incoming messages at a convenient time.

Its creator, Baydin, tells Mashable that the company became profitable for the first time last month, just before passing the 1-million-downloads mark. The free inbox tool installs a button in Gmail from which users can schedule outgoing emails for optimal times or keep tabs on emails they receive. Instead of starring important emails, users can "Boomerang" them — scheduling the emails to return as new messages at either a specific time or if nobody responds. The Gmail extension launched in 2010 shortly after an Outlook version of the same tool, but it took off faster.

As email creeps further into our work days and holidays alike, Boomerang isn't the only inbox management tool that has taken off. Image courtesy of iStockphoto, gavran333.
