E-tailers have virtually taken the big chunk of sales from traditional retailers and the major online players – Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal – have recorded a phenomenal volume of sales. The mega sales push by leading e-tailers has propelled the demand for delivery boys or bikers to an all-time high. Salaries and incentives for high performers have already shot up more than 50% to about Rs.25,000 a month as staffing firms are faced with a severe shortage of bikers.

And this is just the start, for the busiest phase of the festive season for retailers has just begun. The demand has accelerated to about 100,000 bikers, according to staffing firms which are facing a massive shortage of up to 70%. Industry experts opine that this festive season, up to one lakh jobs will be created in mostly the delivery, logistics and customer care space.

The Hub is expected to create more than 10,000 jobs within a year and contribute at least 5% of the all-India target of 15 lakh jobs by the year 2019, a press release by Indian Cellular Association said earlier. Foxconn has already begun operations in Andhra Pradesh for manufacturing brands such as Xiomi and Gionee. Other significant brands like Micromax, UTL (Karbonn) and Celkon would be starting their manufacturing operations soon, the release further said.

The findings are based on the Labour Bureau’s ’25th Quarterly Report on Changes in Employment’. The report also stated that the overall employment increased by 5.21 lakh in the previous fiscal, higher than 2.76 lakh during 2013-14. At industry level, the highest increase in employment has been observed in the IT/BPOs sector where jobs increased by 37,000 during January-March, over November-December, 2014, followed by textiles including apparel sector (24,000), automobiles sector (20,000) and metals sector (1,000).

The report also indicates that in the direct category of workers, employment has increased by 15,000 whereas for contract category of workers, it has increased by 49,000 during the quarter ended March, 2015 over December, 2014.
