Online video lets consumers create their own TV - February 1, 2007. (Business 2.0 Magazine) -- Mark Hall, a former executive with RealNetworks, fell in love with online video two years ago, thanks to an ultrafast broadband connection in his London home.

Online video lets consumers create their own TV - February 1, 2007

When he returned to San Francisco last year, he decided to address the growing need in online video: a way to find just the good stuff and skip the junk. His self-funded startup, VodPod, was born in San Francisco in June and so far shows a lot of promise. VodPod allows consumers to build their own "pods," which is Hall's rather fancy term for online video channels. The idea is that you grab the videos you like from any of the other 100-odd video-sharing sites already online - say, every bird-watching vid you can get your hands on - and build a channel called the Birding Pod.

Anyone can watch it, and anyone can add videos to the channel. This is one of the hot opportunities in new new media: hyperaggregation. Smart sites evolve, that is, from aggregators to hyperaggregators. 8hands Aggregates Social Networks on Your Desktop. 8hands is a new social network aggregator that has just launched in public alpha.

8hands Aggregates Social Networks on Your Desktop

The 8hands service is a downloadable desktop application that will aggregate all of your social network's information, spanning MySpace, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr accounts, showing stats such as your overall traffic rank and your number of friends. RSS feeds can be added to your 8hands account as well. The desktop application looks much like an Instant Messenger, and shows your eight most active friends, as well as a scrolling menu of your friends with the latest activity.

Flickr photos, YouTube videos and your imported RSS feeds scroll at the bottom, and photos and videos can be sent to friends on your list. 8hands will rank your friends according to their interactions with you, meaning the most active are the ones that show up on your 8hands list. This can be limiting, as 8hands gives you no access to the friends that aren't the most active. Welcome to Iceflake. Social Degree » The Problem With Profile Aggregators.

Posted by Brian Balfour in Online Communities Jan 18th, 2007 | no responses In a number of my posts I have talked about how there will eventually need to be a way to bring all of your social network memberships together in one place. This will definitely become more evident as niche social networks who offer more engaging features become more popular. “Profile Aggregators” such as ProfileLinker , Spokeo , Profilactic , Iceflake , and FindMeOn are already trying to solve this problem. I commend all of their efforts in trying to solve a growing issue. ProfileLinker is currently the best, however, all in their current state still aren’t very compelling. The main problem I currently see is that most Profile Aggregators currently take the “efficiency” stance. To answer the first question, I currently don’t think that profile aggregators even accomplish the goal of efficiency.

Secondly, is efficiency truly what people want? Ziki.com : Be visible.
