The study find that 11 percent of US adults own tablets mostly iPads and 77 percent use them daily. Beyond this 53 percent of tablet owners consume news on these devices on a daily basis. Tablet owners are more educated, affluent and employed than the general US population. And they're using tablets to access news instead of their PCs, TVs and print (to a lesser degree). Pew says that people are with their tablets roughly 95 minutes daily. Tablet owners' usage only becomes steady after a "honeymoon" period. Tablet usage varies as time goes by.
After a 6-month period of tablet use discovery, tablet-owners return to PC’s for certain tasks including online shopping. Marketers need to take this lifecycle into account. The way consumers use their devices changes over time, as consulting firm Rosetta found in its recent study about tablet owners. A key insight of the report was that people tend to do a lot more activities on their tablet in the first one to six months of their tablet ownership than after a year of ownership. iPad Claims 82% of U.S. Installed Tablet Market, Eating Into Other Devices. Media research firm Nielsen today announced the results of its Mobile Connected Device Report survey for the first quarter of 2011, determining that Apple held a dominating 82% of the installed base for tablets in the United States during the quarter.
The survey found 3G-capable iPads slightly more popular than non-3G models, 43% to 39%, with the Samsung Galaxy Tab proving the most popular competitor with only 4% of the market. The study also examined the effect of tablet ownership on usage of other devices, with 35% of tablet owners reporting that they had decreased usage of desktop computers and 32% reporting decreased usage of notebook computers. Interestingly, 9% of owners actually increased their desktop machine usage while 13% increased their notebook usage, calling into question just how much of the usage variation is due to effects from tablets.
