Twenty-four cadets arrived in Fremont Thursday night and are spending two weeks attending one of the Civil Air Patrol’s national flight academies at Fremont Municipal Airport and Midland University. “It’s kind of a plum school,” said Lt. Col. Dave Halperin, public affairs officer. “It’s for young people who have progressed through our training program and are selected as participants in this special activity.
“Cadets range in age from 13 to 18. Cadets spent Friday in student orientation, and will typically participate in flying activities at the airport in the morning and ground school at Midland in the afternoons, graduating on June 28. The academy offers cadets an opportunity to learn to fly the Cessna 172 Skyhawk aircraft with a certified flight instructor.
The learning environment is specially designed for cadets with a low instructor-to-student ratio, normally one instructor per two students. Cadets will also receive an orientation flight on a U.S. Col. Smart Flight Training.
