6 Exceptional Eco Schools. It may not feel like it yet, but summer is starting to wind down - and as we look forward to the start of the school year we're showcasing six of our favorite green campuses.

6 Exceptional Eco Schools

High-tech, low-tech or somewhere in-between, these six schools are all beautiful and brilliant designs that foster smarter students while leaving a much smaller impact on the planet they will inherit. Philippine Bamboo School Project FROG Oaxaca School of Plastic Arts APAP Open School German High School School of Art, Design and Media The Green School This magnificent school campus in Bali is made entirely from sustainably harvested bamboo. Modular thinking has gone high-tech with Project FROG‘s Zero Energy Classroom, which is a meticulously designed kit that allows a school to get up and running in as short a time as possible.

Group Effort: The Next Generation 2011 Winner. HOK / Vanderweil’s Net Zero Building Retrofit Proposal Wins Competition. Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 17, 2011 Architects and engineers from HOK / Vanderweil showcased their creativity and sustainable design expertise with a winning net zero building retrofit design in Metropolis magazine’s Next Generation® Design Competition 2011.

HOK / Vanderweil’s Net Zero Building Retrofit Proposal Wins Competition

Young designers were challenged to develop net zero energy solutions for a 46-year-old federal office building in downtown Los Angeles. In alignment with President Barack Obama’s mandate that federal agencies lower their greenhouse gas emissions, the building’s owner, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), has a goal of reducing building emissions 30 percent by 2020. HOK / Vanderweil’s “Process Zero: Retrofit Resolution,” a retrofit design process, reduces the building’s overall energy demand by 84 percent while generating the remaining 16 percent on-site.

The design team’s breakthrough idea, believed to be an architectural first, uses energy-producing microalgae to help power the building. The Praxis of Flow. Wednesday, 23 February 2011 GreenMuze Staff Praxis of Flow by Arthur Azoulai and Melody Rees.

The Praxis of Flow

Praxis of Flow eco-architecture design for San Juan, Puerto Rico by Arthur Azoulai and Melody Rees, applies biomimicry in its continuous flowing lines and ecological application. Designed to connect buildings via the Praxis of Flow design. Italian spaghetti and the South American ant-eater inspired the curved and convoluted green structure. Green pedestrian and tram pathways connect to the outside space, surrounding structures, and the main edifice. Via Evolo & EcoFriend. Exploration Architecture - Environment. The Jerusalem Seminar in Architecture. Michael Pawlyn Michael Pawlyn set up Exploration in 2007 to focus on environmentally sustainable architecture inspired by nature. From 1997 to 2007 he worked with Grimshaw Architects and was instrumental in the design development of the Eden Project. He was responsible for leading the design of the Biomes and proposals for a third major climatic enclosure.

He initiated and developed the Grimshaw environmental management system resulting, in December 2000, in the company becoming the first firm of European architects to achieve certification to ISO14001. He has lectured widely on the subject of sustainable design in the UK and abroad and in May 2005 delivered a talk at the Royal Society of Arts with Ray Anderson, CEO of Interface.

The presentation will describe three strands of biomimicry: architecture inspired by natural forms, natural systems and natural processes. Download Presentation – PDF Format Workshop.
