Metacognition is defined as " cognition about cognition", or "knowing about knowing." [ 1 ] It can take many forms; it includes knowledge about when and how to use particular strategies for learning or for problem solving. [ 1 ] Metamemory , defined as knowing about memory and mnemonic strategies, is an especially important form of metacognition." [ 2 ] Differences in metacognitive processing across cultures have not been widely studied, but could provide better outcomes in cross-cultural learning between teachers and students. [ 3 ] Some evolutionary psychologists hypothesize that metacognition is used as a survival tool, which would make metacognition the same across cultures. [ 3 ] Writings on metacognition can be traced back at least as far as De Anima and the Parva Naturalia of the Greek philosopher Aristotle . [ 4 ] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metacognition

Cognitive acceleration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cognitive acceleration or CA is an approach to teaching designed to develop students' thinking ability, developed by Michael Shayer and Philip Adey from 1981 at King's College London . [ 1 ] The approach builds on work by Piaget , Vygotsky and Feuerstein and takes a constructivist approach. [ edit ] Theoretical background From Piaget, CA recognises there are stages in intellectual development. At school the most important transition is from concrete thinking - which deals with facts and descriptions, to abstract thinking - any thinking which involves a mental process. From Vygotsky, CA takes the concept of Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD): the difference between what a learner can do with and without help.

If you've come to freelance writing from a normal 8 to 5 job, you might be wondering how much to charge for your work. One thing though, your paycheck was based on an hourly rate, so when you're seeking clients for your freelance writing business, keep an hourly rate in mind. The truth about freelance writing is that it's not your choice on how much you're going to get paid for your output (whether it's a magazine article or a website article). Your rates are determined by the writing sub-industry you're trying to break into. Some markets are really inflexible, while some are negotiable (with limitations on how much your client is willing to pay). http://ezinearticles.com/?Freelance-Writer-Rates---How-Much-Should-You-Charge-For-Freelance-Writing-Jobs?&id=3641482

[hep-th/0702178] Eternal inflation and its implications

http://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0702178 (Submitted on 22 Feb 2007) Abstract: I summarize the arguments that strongly suggest that our universe is the product of inflation. The mechanisms that lead to eternal inflation in both new and chaotic models are described. Although the infinity of pocket universes produced by eternal inflation are unobservable, it is argued that eternal inflation has real consequences in terms of the way that predictions are extracted from theoretical models. The ambiguities in defining probabilities in eternally inflating spacetimes are reviewed, with emphasis on the youngness paradox that results from a synchronous gauge regularization technique. Although inflation is generically eternal into the future, it is not eternal into the past: it can be proven under reasonable assumptions that the inflating region must be incomplete in past directions, so some physics other than inflation is needed to describe the past boundary of the inflating region.

21st century education

http://www.21stcenturyschools.com/What_is_21st_Century_Education.htm Like Alice, many educators, policy makers and even the general public respond resoundingly with "That's impossible!" when challenged to adopt a new paradigm of education for the 21st century. Most people today adhere to a paradigm of education that is strictly 19th century. But, like the Queen, a growing number of educators are believing in and accomplishing "the impossible".

Dangerously Irrelevant

http://dangerouslyirrelevant.org/ This post is part of an ongoing series abridged from the 21st Century Teaching Project (21CTP) - a study of expert professional development trajectories and digital age practice. Let’s assume that the goal of teacher training and professional development (PD) is to prepare teachers with powerful models, tools, and pedagogies that will inform expert practice over a career. If so, the 21CTP is designed to help us as a community, 1) hear from 39 award winning teachers, and 2) ask relevant questions about how to study and design teacher training and PD in the coming years. When over half of these teachers say they completely changed their practice mid-career, I’m particularly interested in what, who, and how those trajectories started. In the first part of this series , I shared one data point on what wasn’t working.

Purpose of Education

Education has been immersed in conflict for decades. John Dewey in 1938, after twenty years of experience with the progressive schools and twenty years of criticism of his theories, wrote. . . "It would not be a sign of health if such an important social interest as education were not also an arena of struggles, practical and theoretical. . .
