Search Units. MOOC Pilot Lessons Learned. In February 2013, the University of Wisconsin-Madison announced that it would offer four pilot Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) through partnership with the online learning company Coursera.
In the fall of 2013, UW-Madison launched two free and open pilot courses to audiences around the world, with two additional pilot courses to follow in 2014. As part of Educational Innovation, an initiative led by the Chancellor and Provost’s Offices, MOOCs are an opportune way to actively explore the effectiveness of emerging learning environments and education practices, collaborate with the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), and reach a vast and varied body of learners.
By launching a small number of high-quality pilot courses, we are directing a uniquely UW-Madison MOOC experience and taking the Wisconsin Idea of outreach and service to global scale. Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) As one method of transcending national boundaries and bringing the latest knowledge to the world, the University of Tokyo has begun offering Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on a trial basis using the Coursera platform.
This trial is the first of its kind to be conducted in Japan. Two courses have been offered in English starting in September 2013: Kavli IPMU’s Director and Project Professor Hitoshi Murayama’s “From the Big Bang to Dark Energy,” as well as “Conditions of War and Peace,” a lecture by Kiichi Fujiwara, a professor in the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics and Head of the UTokyo Policy Alternatives Research Institute’s Security Studies Unit.
Over 80,000 people in more than 150 countries registered for these courses, and approximately 5,400 finished the courses for which they registered.
