The family moved to Oxford in 1856, where they met Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll. He befriended the family, and photographed the daughters on numerous occasions. On July 4, 1862, Dodgson took Lorina, Edith and Alice on a boat trip from Oxford to Godstow. To entertain the girls, Dodgson made up a fantastical story with a young protagonist named Alice. The girls loved the story, and Alice begged him to write it down. Alice grew up to marry wealthy cricketer Reginald Hargreaves at the age of 28, and was active in high society for much of her life.
