Keith Haring's 'Crack is Wack': NYC's Most Famous Mural? | Matthew Israel. Crack is Wack is arguably Keith Haring's best-known work. It might also be the most famous mural in New York City. For one, it probably has more daily views than any other mural in NYC, due to its location next to passing cars on the Harlem River Drive (in Manhattan at 128th Street).

How Crack is Wack came to be is not well-known. Nor is the fact that the mural is not the original version. Benny was one of the major catalysts for Crack is Wack. Around this time, Haring often drove past a handball court located in a small park near the Harlem River Drive. The subject for the painting quickly became crack. Haring painted Crack is Wack without asking for permission. He finished the entire mural in one day. While a lot of people came to watch and cars honked their horns from the road in appreciation, no one bothered Haring and his group -- not even policemen. This peace was short-lived. People immediately came to Haring's defense. Haring eventually was fined only $100. 6 Places to See Keith Haring’s Artwork in NYC. Keith Haring in the Pop Shop. Photo via the Keith Haring Foundation Even now, more than twenty years after his death, Keith Haring remains a symbol of New York City’s street art scene. Haring came to New York to study at the School of Visual Arts in 1978 and quickly immersed himself in the city’s alternative art scene, befriending Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf and Andy Warhol.

While he experimented with video, installation, collage and performance art, his true talent lay in his line paintings. Over time, he came to be known for his distinctive style using bold, heavy lines, simple shapes and figures, and bright colors. In the ’80s, Haring gained international recognition, but he never stopped giving back to the community, creating many public murals around the world. Since Sunday, May 4 is his birthday, we’re looking at the work Haring left behind for New Yorkers to enjoy. Haring painted this 170 foot-long mural on the wall that connects the Carmine Street Pool to the James J. From the archives: Keith Haring was here - Videos.

The “Haring Miami” exhibit in the Design District is showcasing signficantly fewer pieces of art. Following a court order from the Keith Haring Foundation in New York, which is not affiliated with the Miami event, producers have removed about 165 pieces from the exhibit. The 10 remaining pieces were the only ones deemed authentic by the Haring Foundation. The court order also called for the destruction of brochures and a catalog related to the show, which was co-produced by Michael Rosen and Manny Hernandez.

Admission to the exhibit, which opened Wednesday, was originally $25 online or $30 at the door. The first 200 visitors to “Haring Miami” received free admission on Saturday. “Everything’s benefiting Best Buddies at this point,” Rosen said. The Best Buddies logo, a Keith Haring image of two people with arms slung around one another’s shoulders, is one of Haring’s most recognizable art works. “Haring Miami” closes Sunday.
