Futura's "Break" - NYC,1981. By Chris Pape Futura 2000 grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and was at a perfect age to catch the beginning of the graffiti movement in New York. In 1970, he was a lanky thirteen-year-old kid roaming the streets of the city trying to figure out who Taki 183 was. Within a year he knew all of the names and jumped into the fray himself. Futura picked his name from the futuristic typeface, the number came from 2001: A Space Odyssey, a visionary movie by Stanley Kubrick.

Futura began writing with his friend Marc Edmonds who wrote Ali. Graffiti had come of age during Futura’s stint in the Navy, he tried doing some of the older bubble letter styles he knew when he came back but they seemed antiquated. In the Fall of 1980, during the greatest year for whole-cars, Futura pulled off one of the most talked about trains ever with the aid of Dondi at the Utica Avenue layup. Other writers bugged out over the Futura whole-car and it cemented his place in graffiti history. LIBRARY STREET COLLECTIVE. Highlights: José Parlá @ Concord City Place (Toronto) This past Thursday, José Parlá was the guest of honor at a commencement party that paid tribute to the two ginormous murals he recently endowed to the City of Toronto.

Commissioned by the Concord City Place, the Brooklyn-based street art legend turned contemporary art heavyweight proved first hand what it means to “go big or go home”, with a duo of larger than life works executed in his patented graffiti-inspired calligraphic style. This impressive community art project serves as a fulfilling appetizer for Parlá’s upcoming NYC solo exhibition, Wall, Diaries, and Paintings, with Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery on March 3rd.

As revealed in an interview with The Ministry of Artistic Affairs, there will also be a signing for his new book at The Standard Hotel in New York on March 5th. More images after the jump. Partnering with Pointer Brand meant a lot to me as they are a family owned american business that’s been running since 1913 from Bristol Tenessee, allowing us to be under a made in USA label for the first time. I’m using the camo fabric from the pocket on our spring delivery and it felt natural to re-inject it in their chore jacket.

Made at a limited range of 170 pieces, this true americana piece is available only on the jackthreads website. This article was posted by Gorey 1 Month, 3 weeks, 4 days, 11 minutes ago.
